    Cherry stocks

Be sure to wear rubber gloves, and keep some vinegar nearby to neutralize the lye in case you are splashed. Lye reacts with the tannic acid in the wood and causes the wood to change color. I've used 1 tablespoon of lye in a pint of water. Brush the lye solution on and keep applying it until...

lead round balls, are they really round?

This ball rolled out from under the hide of a WT. It was a steep, downhill shot across a hollow (125yards+)and impacted just left of center where the neck meets the shoulders. The ball nicked the backbone before penetrating the depth of the body and almost came out the brisket. The ball was...

    Making Flints !

If I had knappable rock to work with, I would have no aversion to using spalls in my flintlocks.

    Main charge question

I'm using 60gr ffg in my .45, 80gr fffg in my .50, used 85gr fffg in my .54, and never more than 100gr fffg in my .58. I use 100 -120gr fffg in my .62, and have used ffg to similar results by bumping the charge another 20gr, all Goex. The furthest I have shot and taken deer was 125yards+, but...

    Bobby Hoyt barrel work

I talked to Bobby a couple of days ago. He has about 200 barrels there to do whether it be rebores or relines, and another 100 to make. Realize that he is 73, has had both knees replaced, and has one young helper..... Ed Rayl is doing only limited work, getting older. Getz has medical issues...

    What do I have here?

Am I seeing a gap between the rear of the barrel and the stock? If so, you will want to address that, elimiate the gap and support the barrel to prevent your stock from cracking.

    #11 nipple to 209 primer

Mag Spark makes conversions, and I had one. Some years back when percussion caps were harder to find and more $ than 209s, I tried one on a TC Grey Hawk. It worked, and even worked with BH209, but I only had it as a reserve. That said, if I had a supply of hard to ignite substitutes and 209s...

Need advice on difficult loading PRB

You need a patch thicker than the grooves are deep to make a seal. IIRC, Rice specs .012" on square bottom and .016" on radius groove, so thicker patches are your first need. You might need to go to a smaller diameter ball to load thicker patches, but you'll have to experiment and see what...

    Bobby Hoyt barrel work

He can cut square bottom, round bottom, gain twist, or your choice of twist no quicket than 1-13" IIRC

Can someone tell me what I am looking at when I video'd my GPR bore? from bottom to top.

I can't tell if that is pitting, lead, or just not completely clean.

    .75 RIFLE???

I have shot a 1oz roundball over 140gr ffg Swiss in a 9# rifle, 2" x 5" buttplate with not much drop, and it wasn't anything I wanted to shoot target with.

    .75 RIFLE???

Then or now?? There is an early J P Beck that is ~67cal right off the top of my head. Rice offers their .66cal barrel, Hoyt will cut .69 rifled, and Getz did make .72 rifled. Somebody did or does make even bigger like 4 bore, so how much pain do you want?
