    What is your hunting rifle?

This thread has me thinking. Ive never hunted with my flintlock, and cant say I plan to this season. Last year I took a deer with my percussion Hawken and a PRB, but while in a modern treestand wearing modern camo. It wasn't much different than any other hunt, except for the smoke cloud when I...

    Passthroughs By A Ball

I shot a big doe last year with a .490 PRB atop 80gr of 2F Goex at 42 yds. Double lung shot, complete pass through. She ran 30yds and flopped over dead. I doubt I use anything BUT a PRB for deer ML hunting from here on out.

    3f and 58s

I'm lucky with my .50cal I guess. It shoots almost exactly the same with 80gr 2F Swiss and 70gr 3F Swiss. That said, I buy 2F Swiss for it, and prime with 4F Swiss. But if I were to use one powder, its nice to know I can prime with and shoot the 3F.

    Flint to frizzen spacing...

Took some pics. -half **** -full **** -where the flint strikes the frizzen(60-70deg angle) -uncocked

    Flint to frizzen spacing...

Yeah, I usually just wipe frizzen and flint with a dry patch before every shot.

    Bevel up or down

    I'm usually bevel down

    Flint to frizzen spacing...

It makes sense. Smaller flints wear faster. Im not complaining really, because I dont think I'm doing anything wrong. A new flint sparks great, and the gun always goes boom, until it doesnt. I dont have excessive frizzen wear. And both locks are consistent...15-20 shots>failure to fire>take...

    Flint to frizzen spacing...

I have 2 locks. One is a L&R, the other the stock one from my 1979-80 Dixie Gun Works TN Mtn Rifle. They both spark well. Flints last equally in both. Professor, what size flint did you get all those shots off of?

    Flint to frizzen spacing...

My problem is, my lock takes small flints. 5/8x3/4". After 15-20 ish shots, ill lose spark. Ill knap it, readjust placement and get another 5-10 shots. 20-30 total is about my average. After that, its generally too worn/small to securely fit and stay locked in the jaws. Its just the way it is...

    Flint to frizzen spacing...

I always check where, when the trigger is pulled and the hammer drops, exactly where the flint first comes into contact with the frizzen. I like it to first touch about 1/4 to 1/3 of the way down from the top, so its scraping 3/4 to 2/3rds of the length of the frizzen. Ill move it back or...

    CABELAS HAWKEN CARBINE

I have an Investarms Charles Daly Hawken, .50cal percussion. Same gun. Its a good shooter, never had an issue.

    To .50 or to .54 !?

A little off topic, but its been mentioned here so, what does everyone consider "fast twist" and "slow twist?" I "think" my Dixie TN Mtn flintlock is 1:56, and my Investarms percussion Hawken is 1:48. I know 1:66" is considered slow twist, slow is best for round ball and fast is better for...

    To .50 or to .54 !?

I have three .50cal muzzleloaders. One of each(flint, percussion, inline). Ive never felt undergunned for deer, which is really the only big game I hunt. That said, my son has a .50 inline, a .54 flint and a .58 percussion. Having shot all 6 above rifles, in a question between 50 and 54, id go...

I preparation for the day I dry ball one

Heres the thing they keep on the range during shoots at Friendship. It really does work like a charm.

    hanging over the fireplace

I like deer hooves for ML hangers. Not hard to make; just a little messy. I cut and scrape as much tissue off as possible, then just use a salt soak then borax to finish them. See bottom gun...

    Dutch Schultz' Accuracy Method

I use the Dutch method. Have worked most all parts of it except weighing out individual balls(ill eventually get to that). I DO only use ball from one guy and they've shot pretty consistently. After multiple range trips, last time out shooting blackpowder(May??) I found my "load." I then cut a...

    Tip Curtis frontier shop

I always go to Friendship; my best friend has family land about 10min from there, and we've hunted it for decades. We went down Saturday to do some work, and stopped by Gunmakers Row to buy a few things from the one booth open, Flintlocks LLC. No one shooting, no one primitive camping. BUT...

Where to set the sights ?

I like dead on at 50yds. I dont see much if any difference between 25 and 50yds with my gun in terms of hitting where I aim. I doubt id take a shot further than 75yds with a PRB at a deer or anything else with a heartbeat. At 100yd+ targets, ill aim a little higher.

    .54 caliber loads

I worked up "the" most accurate load for my sons .54 cal flintlock. After lots of trial and error(3 different sized balls(.526, .530, .535), 4 different patches/lubes, 70-80-90gr loads) heres what shoots best: 80gr Swiss 2F, .535 ball and white joann fabrics cotton patching(.014 thick...

Recovered Patches - Whats Going On Here

I agree. If youre gun is as accurate as you think it(and you) can be, i wouldnt fret about patch condition. I had a similar post earlier this year, and this was the consensus conclusion. As for the patch ripping, what you could have is a burr somewhere in the bore. A few passes with a wad of...
