How many carry non PC or HC knives......

Ive yet to go hunting in all out period correct gear. Mainly because I dont have the attire and I really don't see myself walking miles where I hunt in any kind of moccasins. But if I did, id use my PC knife. I have at least 30 knives, and this may be blasphemy but, I REALLY prefer my Havalon...

Took my friends son deer hunting, but it did not end up as expected.

I agree shotguns are always best. In my situation this past November, it caught us totally by surprise. There were 2 pics of the same 2-3 dogs over a 3+ month span. I was hunting with my Marlin 336 in .30-30, which I immediately shouldered. From that night on, when back in that area, as soon as...

Took my friends son deer hunting, but it did not end up as expected.

I know this is a black powder forum and website, but I'd never go into the woods, hiking, hunting, whatever, with JUST a black powder gun. Yes, I know Daniel Boone et al did that, for months at a time, in wolf and bear filled wilderness, but I'd bet if a modern revolver was available to him...

Took my friends son deer hunting, but it did not end up as expected.

This deer season, we had an encounter with feral dogs. I had placed a camera where I always do, at my favorite stand site in late July and had only 2 pics of the dogs between then and mid november, so we didn't think anything of it. So opening day evening hunt....my friend and his son are in...

Swiss 3F or 2F in 50 Caliber flintlocks?

In my rifle, 70gr of 3f Swiss and 80gr of 2f Swiss shoots just about the same. I use 2f, prime with 4f.

    Woods walks

I generally use drylubed patching and swab between shots. With dry patching, I NEED to! But I can see that being a pain on a woods walk. Next time I go BP shooting, I'm gonna take Mr. Flintlocks lube for my patching and see if I can get off 30 shots without swabbing. I usually cut patching at...

    Dixie Gun Works Poor Boy

I have a DGW TN Mtn rifle po boy. Mines an early one, 1979-1980 per DGW. Ive done lots of load testing and it likes 80gr Swiss 2f, a .495 ball, and a white .014 cotton fabric from Joann Fabrics drylubed with 7:1 ballistol and water. Love the gun, is a great shooter. My only gripe is flint...

    Good day at the range

I apologize if this question has already been asked ad nauseum, but is it necessary to repeat the ball after trying to shoot it out after putting some 4f thru the touch hole unsuccessfully? Could 3-4 grains of 4f REALLY produce enough pressure to potentially bulge the barrel? I did it once and...

    Hawkins 50 cal

Try a thinner patch. Remember, its the compressed thickness that matters. I have some .018 ticking that compresses to less than some .015 ticking that I have. Im currently using a .495 ball with .014 fabric that compresses down to .00325(if im reading the micrometer right!)

    High shoulder shot .50 cal

I won't take that shot with a roundball. I rarely even take it with a centerline rifle. Unless I NEED to plant the deer in its tracks due to various circumstances, I take the vitals shot.

    NMLRA Sale

In their defense, THEY didnt cancel the Spring and Fall shoots for the heck of it. The governor of Indiana basically mandated it. No one saw COVID coming. And someone with a campsite IS/WAS able to camp yearround. They never closed the campground.

Flintlock swabbing process? How to clean between shots?

In my limited experience, you're right. I can shoot dozens of shots if I use a product like Mr Flintlocks as patch lube. It wipes fouling as it goes down the barrel. Spit will do the same. But that last 3-4" where the powder and ball sit, never really get wiped. It gets fouled, tight, and...

    Rust In The Bore

How, back in the 18th century, did the longhunters and frontiersman clean their rifles? They shot a lot, kept their guns loaded in all weather conditions imaginable, had dirtier burning powder than we have(homemade even!) and a very limited array of cleaning stuff, especially 2 months into a...

    Rust In The Bore

I have an old Dixie TN Mtn rifle and a Investarms Hawken. The DGW has been shot considerably more. I clean them both the exact same way, with the same products. After hot, soapy water, and dry patches til they're spotless, i run a patch saturated with Barricade down and up, wait 5 min, and do it...

    What is your hunting rifle?

By "hunting hard," i mean sitting dark to dark, regardless of weather, day after day after day. No lunch breaks, no nap or "this burst of freezing rain sucks" breaks, etc. Putting in the time EARNING that shot. We've been doing this for a while. Obviously, this takes into consideration wind...

    What is your hunting rifle?

My best friend has 300 Acres of family land in SE Indiana we've hunted for years. We intimately KNOW the property, and have 13 ladderstands permanently set up. Deer camp is a tradition for us; we're passing it down to our sons too. Generally that 1st week of firearms season, we both gun hunt...
