    Brand new

My first flintlock was a Traditions Pennsylvania rifle. It almost turned me against flintlocks. The problem was the way the breech plug was designed. Fortunately I bought a Jackie Brown gun and I still shoot it after more than 20 years. I very much regret not buying it in the first place.

    Finishing nails for barrel pins

FWIW, the little flags that are used to mark underground utilities have a 1/16 shaft and make great pins. Any hardware store sells them, or you can just re-purpose some you happen to run across.

    Buying scrap lead question ...

When a dentist office moves, usually they strip the lead out of the xray room areas. Be on the lookout for those. The balls may glow in the dark a little. . . . :)

    Greetings from Cape Breton Island

Greetings. Ever go to Louisbourg? Lots of Kit Ravenshear guns there.

    I have a soft frizzen!

Just re-sole the frizzen. The easiest and most durable option. If it is done right, you can barely see it.

    Examples of fusil fin?

Also, the best kit for a replica is from the Rifle Shoppe. The problem with it (and most fusil kits) is the barrel. Finding one of the proper length and caliber is the problem. It will be necessary to order a custom barrel or accept that the fusil will be a shorter length. I used a .62...

And the accompanying description of the above fusil fin de chasse:

    Examples of fusil fin?

This is a gun that I use for reference when working on a fusil fin de chasse. It is a little grainy and difficult to see a lot of detail carving, but it gives the general view of what these guns would have looked like. I have seen a number of the actual fusils and there is a lot more detail to...

How did American forces reload in battle?

In Wetzel's case he proved what he could do in front of witnesses. For others, who knows.

How did American forces reload in battle?

At one of the 225th Rev War battles we were provided with cartridges which had been rolled then dipped in paraffin wax. The wax flaked off in the holes of the wooden cartridge box and created a real mess. I have never heard of this being done in the 18th century. I can't imagine what a...

How did American forces reload in battle?

Just from my own personal experience. For years I have been part of various groups that do demos for the public at historic sites. A few let you load from a powder horn, but most require the use of pre-rolled cartridges. When it is allowed I always load from a horn with a powder measure. I...

A bag question for the PC stitch counters

As to thread, a maker I know uses only the synthetic thread on his pouches so that they can never be mistaken or sold for an original. One time he had made a pouch on commission. Four years later he was going through a museum and saw his pouch, now much aged, worn, antiqued. He went to he...

    Stubborn Stuck Bullet

I never said the the alternative methods would work in his case, only they they might be easier if they could be utilized. By removing the breech plug a steel rod can be placed against the ball and can be used to drive the ball out of the barrel.

War films set in the (pre-Revolution) 18th century?

And then there is Barry Lyndon. It is set in Europe but has some good action scenes. And a lot of no-action scenes.

War films set in the (pre-Revolution) 18th century?

There is Allegheny Uprising. With John Wayne. About James Smith's Black Boys. It is what it is.

    Stubborn Stuck Bullet

Just a thought. Removing the breech plug is a lot simpler that other things and takes less time. Unless you can use CO2 or tap a little 4f powder into the vent hole.

    I need a cartridge box

Mt. Misery? That would be G. Gedney Godwin, right? Good people and good products. I have dealt with them for twenty years.
