    1849 As A First "Colt"?

Learning to fix most any Black Powder Revolver is going to save you a lot of expense and frustration. I learned by building a few kits in the 1980s. This 1849 Hartford Pocket Model by Palmetto came as a Dixie Kit. I liked it because it was 36cal instead of 31. Palmetto had a bad reputation but...

    Black powder

I get my Black powder at Kentucky Gun Company in Bardstown, Ky. Schuetzen-$22.99, Swiss-$31.99. They have to go outside the main building to a special storage building to get it. There are special storage rules for black powder that keep most gun shops from stocking it anymore.

    The Evil Dremel.

I do the same thing. A rigid fixture Is so necessary to get precision results. My Dremel and Ryobi variable speed moto tools are both over 20 years old and the labels claim to be assembled in the USA. Who knows where the parts were made though. I have used them to finish and smooth inletting...

    The Evil Dremel.

I got a Dremel Model 380 variable speed in the 1980's and use it a lot. Only problem is when the carbon contact brushes wear down but that is a quick-change repair. I read posts about ruining gun stock work but never had a problem and use them on all my stock inlets at least once. You cannot...

    Found my Remington Sheriff

I was just looking in the showcase at one of those at Cabela's priced at $319. I guess I will see if they still have it tomorrow. I had just bought a new gun or I would have bought it then. Yours looks very good. We probably won't see them ever get any cheaper than that.

    L& R Manton Lock

I got this Jacob Dickert L&R lock from Track of the Wolf for a future build. It is pretty well finished and only plan to do a little clean & polish work. I guess it varies as to who finished the work at the source, but all my L&R locks have been ok and work great. I like the Siler better...

A Bad Fly or A Trash Lock?

I have built several Siler kits. They come as cast and take a lot of polishing, grinding, drilling and heat treating of parts to be done properly. To me that does look like the kit model not finished as it should be. The regular locks are finished so much better.

    CVA Squirrel rifle nipple problem

I used 2 CVA Barrels in recent builds of Leman Style guns. The top gun is a 45cal barrel from a CVA Kentucky kit and the bottom gun has a 50cal barrel from a CVA Hawken kit. Both of these drums were fitted with 6-1 MM Hot Shot nipples that screwed right in. I wonder if the Squirrel barrel is...

    Flintlock Pistol Display

I just built this rack to display my latest flintlock pistol from parts found at Hobby Lobby. Pistol built using an un-inleted, shaped fancy maple stock, Siler Small Lock and a 10" 45cal Green Mountain Barrel.

    Starting a Kentucky Pistol Project

Finally got around to putting these parts together. I cut & crowned the barrel to 10". The Fancy Maple looks good with Laurel Mountain Honey Maple Stain I think.

    Triple 7

I have a CVA Hawken 50cal barrel on this gun that used to have a few failures to ignite with 50g of 777 3f. I changed the stock nipple to a Hot Shot CVA nipple for #11 caps from Track of The Wolf and have had no more problems over the past few years. I do fire a cap every so often with no...

    No muzzleloading pepperbox reproductions?

Classic Arms Company once made a kit Pepperbox gun. Deer Creek Products still has some parts listed.

    Good Wood Stripper Recommendations

I have the best luck with Kwik Strip Spray. Even the plastic looking finishes come off in sheets after soaking a few minutes in the foamed-up stripper. Then wash in acetone with 0000 steel wool. Need good stripper resistant gloves as it will burn your skin.

    Attaching a Trigger Guard

I'm working on a Flintlock Pistol build now. I found that a deep socket in various sizes can help shape a trigger guard when set in a vise and used as a mandrel to make smooth curved bends. Here is a picture of how it worked for me. The guard was not bent at all at the rear when I received it.

It Wasn't the Lube - It Was the Powder

I have Schuetzen, Swiss and Goex in 3F. Swiss is cleanest in my 45cal 42" barrel. Not much difference between the other two in this gun. I have noticed harder loading and more fouling on misty humid days shooting from a coverd range on all of them. Humidity may have something to do with that...

    Jax black Barrel Advice?

I have both Brownell's cream Oxpho Blue and Brownell's Dicropan T-4. Both are good but the T-4 gives a darker true black color. The Track of the Wolf brand Tried & True Rust Brown will turn into nice a black with repeated coats if that's what I want.

What "fun" targets are your fav's

This one is 1/2 inch thick and I have shot 45 and 50 caliber round balls in rifles loaded with 50g of black powder at this type of swinging target on our main range with no problems at 50yd . I would think no problem with revolvers at 25yd as I have shot them with 38 and 44 specials there at...

What "fun" targets are your fav's

Made this one recently out of black pipe for the frame, 2x4" base drilled for spike hold downs and 8" steel plate target. I have not got out to the range yet to try it out due to weather. Easy take down for transport. For reactive targets I also like to cut 8', 4"x4" landscape timbers into 1'...

    touch hole liners

I use anti-seize on both flint touch hole liners and percussion drums. When cleaning I periodically check them by giving a slight turn to see if they are still able to be moved. If they feel like they may be getting too hard to turn I remove them and clean and reapply anti-seize. My oldest...

    Need info on lock

I used the Siler Mountain Lock on this Leman Trade Gun build. It's a great lock and should also look good on an Ohio/Vincent gun.
