It's from a 1980's kit and research I did said 33" CVA Kentucky guns were 1:66 twist rate. I bought the old kit missing parts like the lock and trigger for $30 just to get the barrel. Only used the barrel and sights from that kit pinned instead of using keys. On this style gun I just like...

This is a better picture of my Leman Trade Gun I posted a while back. Put together from a CVA .45cal 33" barrel converted to flint, a nice Leman Stock and L&R Replacement Flintlock. The stain is Laurel Mountain Maple. I have the drum and matching Percussion Lock if I ever want to change it back.

Test fired my CVA Percussion to Flint Conversion Today

Hope yours works out as good as mine did Scott. I really like this method of converting these type of guns to flint. I had no idea it could be done this way until reading this forum and others.

    # 11 Caps available

I was in two rural Walmarts today both had a black powder section. The pegs at the top right-hand side of the display were labeled for #11 caps but were empty. Price tag was $5 and change. As usual no one was available to know how often they get them in stock. They are not far from me so I...

Test fired my CVA Percussion to Flint Conversion Today

My L&R Replacement Lock was for a Dixie Mountain Lock and the flash hole in the stainless liner lines up in the larger plug where it should at the top of the pan dead center. The inside lock mortice had to be relieved a bit to accommodate the larger mainspring. The lock plate on mine was just...

Test fired my CVA Percussion to Flint Conversion Today

I have been pleased so far shooting 50g to 60g of 3F Black powder. No problems at all so I've settled on 50g since I only target shoot this one. I found the 1/4x28 stainless vent to work great in the M10 plug of the big hole in the breech. The type that does not have the big flared end fits...

    CVA Mountain Rifle

I agree the old CVA barrels will shoot with great accuracy. I have two barrels a 45cal and a. 50cal I bought on a sale of old kits that had parts missing. I used the barrels in two builds I posted here recently. They shoot as well as the Douglas an Green Mountain barrels in my other guns. I...

    Trade Gun Trigger Help

These L&R Trade Gun Triggers come in several blade types and have the high pivot point for easy trigger pull. I switched from one like yours to this and it made a huge difference in the pull effort. I added a flattened brass washer to take up some side-to-side play and smooth the feel. I like...

Test fired my CVA Percussion to Flint Conversion Today

Here are a few things I did not mention. When threading for a 1/4/28 vent liner into the M10x1.25 plug I had to use a bottoming type of tap to get the threads down deep enough for the liner to fit all the way in. A tapered tap would not cut far enough to seat the liner. The vent flash hole...

    Bois d'arc stock?

Always heard Bois D'Arc and Yew are the best bow woods. I made a few Hickory longbows since there are so many Hickorys on my property. I was practicing before getting a quality stave and I hope to try Bois D'Arc someday. Bet it would make a heck of a Ball End Indian War Club if you had the...

    Cold bending percussion hammers

I have bent a few percussion hammers cold by placing them in a heavy bench vise and using a long handle adjustable crescent wrench slipped over the top of the hammer padded and adjusted to grip it tightly. I get more control with this setup than using a hammer. Usually just needs a small...

Test fired my CVA Percussion to Flint Conversion Today

There were some recent posts about this lately that gave me the idea on doing this with a CVA barrel I have had laying around for years. Using a M10x1.25 stainless bolt and a 1/4-28 vent drilled and tapped into it worked fine as I fired a few test shots. Care must be taken to make sure the...

Converting a Traditions Penn Long Rifle from percussion to flintlock

That has been done by someone because when I was researching this, I saw posts that did just that. I did not want to alter the drum on mine so it could be reused for percussion. It would simplify aligning the barrel bore to the smaller powder pocket in the breech plug. If doing this for a...

Converting a Traditions Penn Long Rifle from percussion to flintlock

If the Traditions has a drum and nipple you need to know if it goes through the barrel and breech plug to the other side like CVA did or just screws into one side. If it just goes through only one side, there may be a vent insert available to replace the drum. That makes things simpler as you...

    Frizzen Hardening?

When using a torch, I heat from the back of the frizzen to avoid burning out the carbon on the front face as per instructions that came with the Siler Kits.

    Frizzen Hardening?

When comparing the Canola Oil vs Warm Brine Water quinch I did notice while moving the part around in the oil it stayed red/orange hot a few seconds longer in the oil due to the steam pocket around the part. The Brine quenched it almost immediately as you said. This helps to understand the...

    Frizzen Hardening?

After building 2 Siler Flintlock Kits I got good results heat treating the frizzens with an Oxygen/Map torch and quinch in Canola Oil. I got the best results though with a quinch in warm brine water and draw at 350 degrees for an hour in the oven. I retreated the one where I used the oil, and...

    Kibler ‘counter top’ build …

I like to use a router mat under the stock when sanding or carving as it holds the gun tight in place and catches the wood dust and chips under or in the mat. Just stick a vacuum hose under there ever so often to clean up. I do a lot on this small countertop in the garage rather than going...
