    Trade knife

I think it is The full tang is questionable, but some aren’t comfortable with a half tang so I decided to “stretch” the line a little

    English scalper

So after the 1/2 tang strength questions, I decided to do some research. This isn’t to change anyone mind, but I was surprised at what I’ve seen so far. I haven’t tried to pry any car doors open, yet 😆. Here’s what I have done Ps This knife was put together quickly and left rough to not waste...

That’s a great idea. I did that on the knife I normally carry, but that was so it wasn’t so shiny and noticeable 😆

Thank you, Bushfire. Yes, I did read the article BrokenNock listed, it had a lot of good information, I even looked up parts 1 and 2 of the article. That will probably be my next knife I make. I have one roughed out now, I’m thinking of doing it as a full tang just for something different…

Thank you for additional information and thoughts on if it could have been make by blacksmith. Your correct with me attempting to make as correct as possible. But if someone wants to order a knife 1/2 tang, full tang or hidden tang I can make them all. As always, I thank everyone for taking time...

My thought was that the wood would be more likely to split, splinter or break then steel, but I personally haven’t done any testing or research.

    English scalper

Yes, but I imagine half tangs were made to save steel. Current times steel is pretty easy to get and Half tangs might not be worth the risk.

Maybe I’ll do some testing/research and get back to you. Now I just need a list of what a knife in the 1700’s would be used for… I’ll start it with the things you just mentioned: Can opener Digging Splitting wood (kindling unless we’re testing Buffalo Skinner)

    English scalper

I’m working on an English Scalper to sell… that with some help from my new friends here I have a better idea of what that is 😆 I used an old file, it’s overall length is 11” Beech Handle. Originally I planned on leaving some “file” texture to give it a little more character, but wanted some...
