    Thoughts on short barrel smoothbore

I have a short Bess 31.5” barrel, I have taken rabbits, grouse and moose with it. My trade gun is 20 ga with a 24” barrel same results as Bess on big and small game. With prb 50 yards groups at 6” at 75 yards it opens up to 18” short range for big game .600 ball 80 gr of 3f. Or 1 oz 7.5 shot ...

Cap and ball revolver firing bird shot

Shot will not damage the gun, best load I found for my REM .44, I made an aluminum foil cartridge filled with #7.5 shot, when you ram it the load expands enough to hold the load in the cylinder , killed a couple of water moccasins when I was in Texas. Fatal pattern at 5’ or less.

    The TC New Englander

I have had mine since 1992, .54 cal. 1:48 twist. Shot 55 gr of 3F, prb. Super accurate 1 hole groups at 50 yards. With the Hornady Great Plains bullets and 110 gr 3F I get 1.5” groups at 100 yards. I have taken Moose, caribou, deer and black bears with it, absolutely reliable in all the weather...

Anyone recognize lock - very early Dutch? Brit? Composite?

Always hard to tell with a photo. During the F&I war muskets for the colonies were hard to get, many Dutch guns and parts were shipped to NA many were non functional and they stripped good parts to make working guns. Maybe that is what this is.

Anyone recognize lock - very early Dutch? Brit? Composite?

That gun looks to be in very good condition for its age. It also looks virtually unfired, I would question its true age.

    Fuse or not?

When I first started with cannons I used a fuse , we had an incident where we had several guns set up and wanted to time the shots one after the other, so all guns were set and fuses lit, the first gun fired then number 2 just as #3 fire . People appeared down range where there should have been...

    Blank rounds and Fire danger

I have been shooting cannons for 30 years, your question doesn’t say how big your gun is. When I shoot blanks I use aluminum foil to make a cartridge for powder only. Just tamping it down is all that is needed, you don’t need a wad to make a Big Bang.my 2” bore gun I use 600 gr of cannon powder...

I have one and I shoot .530 prb all the time. 35 gr 3F, I have had it for years. If it’s a .54 then .530 should be fine.

    Indian trade Musket.

If you look closely at some of the battle scenes, most of the background guns are modified trapdoor rifles altered to look like flintlocks, easier to reload .

    Shotgun loading tools ?

The style of flask would depend on year and place. Also fowling gun or upland gun, in a cased set most were themed. 1850 to 1890 flasks can be found in reproductions. A good resource is the Powder Flask Book,

    HELP IDENTIFY REMINGTON

This could be a copy of the Remington made by Manhattan Firearms company. One I looked at was also .36 cal. Just slightly smaller than the full size REM 1858 .44cal. They are from the same time period.
