    Montana Heritage Muzzleloader Season

That would be pretty sweet! I'd enjoy participating. I sold a muzzleloader to a local fellow this week and he had 0 idea of what to do with one and it was this hunt that was spurring a lot of this on. It think this heritage season is going to get a lot more locals interested in black powder.

    Montana Heritage Muzzleloader Season

I didn't hunt it, but it was the springboard that has gotten me into blackpowder and I plan to this year. It's late season for MT. I see you are from Oregon, so most likely expect cold and snow in most areas, higher elevations will be tough to access. You might be catching tail end of...

Tickled with my new (old) GPR - anything I should check for before shooting?

Thank you for the feedback - appreciated! Question on lube - I have a pile of wonderlubed patches (those are the patches in pic) I like them and they seem like a good fit... (.015" with a .530 ball) is it ok/possible to mix lubes? For example, take one of the pre-lubed patches, and add a bit...

Tickled with my new (old) GPR - anything I should check for before shooting?

Ok I used a scotch brite pad and ran maybe 5 patches worth through... I took it shooting and it is easier to load for sure - still pretty tight after 6-8 shots, but it is better. I was pretty conservative with the first scour session, so when I cleaned it, I ran another 3 scotch brite pads...

I use howard's butcher block on most of my wood items... knife handles, cutting boards etc... it's mineral oil and beeswax - I am pretty impressed with the condition of the stock for being almost 40!

Ok so I'm thinking I may try some bore paste .. I have some 220 grit wheeler scope ring lapping compound... Is this too aggressive? Better to use jb bore paste? I also have some 8 and 4 micron emulsion paste (bark river) that i use knife stropping... Any of these things ok alternatives?

Tickled with my new (old) GPR - anything I should check for before shooting?

Well I took it out for the first time today and am quite happy with the results :-). Was a blast to shoot! Was shooting from a rest at 50 yards. First shot was maybe 1-2 inches low but pretty much dead center and I was pretty shocked but super happy! Had one shot fly maybe 4-5” high, but it’s...

Tickled with my new (old) GPR - anything I should check for before shooting?

For kicks and giggles I just went and re-measured twice and took pics to show my work lol... I'm no scientist, but it definitely seems to be 1:48... and pulling the ramrod out to 15" is definitely a third of a rotation, not a quarter. Also put a pic of the stamps and first 4 of serial for...

Tickled with my new (old) GPR - anything I should check for before shooting?

Good to know... I went and checked and I had it "snug" but not tight... I backed it off a 1/4 twist to be safe... just past where it freely spins.

Check post 20 here... I have heard a couple others confirm it as well for .54s: https://www.muzzleloadingforum.com/threads/great-plains-rifle-rate-of-twist.89518/

Tickled with my new (old) GPR - anything I should check for before shooting?

There are threads here that I found that helped... I used a jag with a tight patch, rammed it all the way down, took some masking tape, and carefully put it around the ramrod right at the muzzle and put a mark that lined up with a reference point (used the front blade). I then carefully/gently...

Thanks for the kind words Mike! Maintenance is therapeutic to me... I try and do my part so my tools can do theirs when asked :-) I'll try both for sure!

I need to keep stocking up for sure! I want to source some swiss powder down the road. I'm shooting schutzen right now and it's nice but slower.

It's stamped "AM" and has a 6 digit serial that starts with 1. From my research rush puts it 1984? It's there anything else I should check?
