Tickled with my new (old) GPR - anything I should check for before shooting?

I've been using traditions wonderlube patches that are .015" thick with my other muzzleloader... I'll experiment, but they smell so yummy lol and do a good job with keeping things clean. Thanks for the tip - I'll capture some patches and see.

Tickled with my new (old) GPR - anything I should check for before shooting?

Ok very cool… I was worried that about 80 would be the max… that’s good to hear. Yea I marked the rod and pulled it a out quarter twist it it was bang on 12”… so for sure a 1:48”. You ever try conicals in your 48? I like the idea of PRBs and will prolly stick with them… but if I ever draw that...

Tickled with my new (old) GPR - anything I should check for before shooting?

Ok excellent info… I actually just wrote before I saw this that I was open to front blade suggestions… I want to shoot first to see if full height or shorter is closer, but it is quite thick I agree… just a ******* file for thinning and lowering? what should I watch for to know if I should...

Tickled with my new (old) GPR - anything I should check for before shooting?

I’m also open to front blade suggestions… I think a nickel or brass, with a thinner post would be nice…

Tickled with my new (old) GPR - anything I should check for before shooting?

Well right now 5 lbs of 2f, 500 primers, and 200 balls… should keep me busy for a couple months ;-) any load recommendations? Figure start around 70 or 80ish grains? Elk, black bear, and multiple flavors of deer are on the menu…

Not nosey at all… this one was on gunbroker… pics looked decent… I set a limit for what I was willing to pay and got it. I lost several other auctions and missed a couple sales here… took a bit of work but I’m really happy with it!

Howdy all, Been learning a lot here lately and mostly watching from the sidelines. I have been trying to track down a .54 Hawken, and after several months, finally landed a nice GPR:-) According to the date code, she’s a 1984. As far as I can tell she is in really nice shape and looks like she...

    Lyman Great Plains parts?

I had thought as well, that but in post 20 here, according to Lyman themselves, the .54 GPR was in fact a 1-48” from 1980-1990. I’m anxious to check my 84 and I’ll report back. https://www.muzzleloadingforum.com/threads/great-plains-rifle-rate-of-twist.89518/

    Lyman Great Plains parts?

Very nice... I've been looking for more info like this... I just bought a .54 (coming in the mail) and it's a very nice condition stamped "AM" which from what I can see in my reading is 1984... Which I also believe that the 80s .54 GPRs were 1 in 48"?

    No more black.

I am new to BP and at the start all I had was Pyrodex RS… with cci magnum 11s, no hang fires and good accuracy for me. FYI I got some real BP from travelers this week… they had both Swiss and schuetzen in stock.

    RWS 1075 Percussion Caps

Just got two tins of 1075s in the mail today... they fit just fine and fire hard on my traditions deer hunter. They are a smidge tighter then my cci's but in a good way... those are pretty loose imo. I have a GPR in the mail and hopefully they work just as well on that one.

    RWS 1075 Percussion Caps

I ordered a couple tins the other day... haven't tried them but anxious to give em a shot. Will be on a GPR if anyone has experience using them?

    Traditions .54 Deerhunter lock

Loosen the tang screw (I think it was called that... The screw on the top)... I ran into a similar issue and the screw was too tight. Wouldn't let half **** work.
