My Apprentice and Her English Fowler

You do credit to your generation Maria. While we on the forum only get a snippet of what your life is, it is very rewarding to get a glimpse of it through the window of your rifle build. Keep it up!

    1853 Enfield two flash holes

I also have the Traditions Enfield, also bought in 2021 and mine does not have a second flash hole. I'm shooting 48 grains of Old Eynsford ffg pushing a 465 grain Rapine mold Minie' at .578. I went through a period last fall where I had a number of misfires and a couple hang fires. My issue...

    Traditions St. Louis rifle kit.

I built a Traditions 3 band Enfield this summer. My first foray into building. Franky it was a fairly straight forward build. I did have to go back and redo a few things like, bedding the barrel, then going back and bedding the tang as well. (you don't know what you don't know) There was a...

First black powder rifle, headed to the range.

Thanks! It has been fun, challenging as well. We just don't know what we don't know...

First black powder rifle, headed to the range.

Problem solved! Set the target at 30 yards, 55 grains, 5 rounds in a 4" group. Moved out to 50 yards same powder load 5 shots, 8" group. Increased the load to 60 grains, 5 rounds 6" group still at 50 yards. POA is about 8" below POI, still on the center line at 50 yards, so that seems to be...

First black powder rifle, headed to the range.

Well it does appear that the lead I purchased from a local guy is harder than the lead I ordered. I really don't have a scientific method to test it, but rolling one of the first batch rounds off the bench onto the floor would not deform the skirt. Rolling a round from the second batch...

First black powder rifle, headed to the range.

I gave a shot at finding a round but no luck. The rounds were all pan lubed prior to being run through the sizer. It's the same lube I've been using all along and haven't noticed an issue before. I'm going out to clean my pot and cast new rounds with the lead that is supposed to be 99.9%. Then...

First black powder rifle, headed to the range.

My bad, I should have said that. I did start with the same load I used with the FFFg Goex. When I didn't see ANYTHING I increased the load by 10% and shot another 3 rounds each time. I got up to 70 grains and saw no changes.

First black powder rifle, headed to the range.

I have since received the lead I had ordered which is supposed to be 100% soft lead. I'll clean the pot and cast a new batch.

First black powder rifle, headed to the range.

Haven't posted in a while but here is an update. I have purchased everything I need to start casting my own rounds then took off for a month to Canada with the wife. Got home a week ago and cast my first batch of .577 Minie's. Have also purchased a few LBS of Olde Eynsford FFg. Went to the...

First black powder rifle, headed to the range.

Nothing major to report, still working through different loads and rounds. But! I did take "Bubba" (my wife) to the range for the first time to fire the Enfield. She thought it was a blast! She was "pinging" the steel target at 100 yards after about 3-4 rounds and doing her own loading after...

First black powder rifle, headed to the range.

Right?! I met the muzzle loader club guy as well. First thing out of his mouth was "if you need powder or caps. we have a Sutlery and buy in bulk. Can't help you with the rounds, but I'm sure someone in the club could." Score! He thought they had 9 or 10 lbs. of Swiss FFg, as well as Schuetzen...

First black powder rifle, headed to the range.

FINALLY! I made it out to the range for the first time since "bedding" the tang. I shot 50 yards with a variety of powder loads and two styles of Minie balls. First off, it no longer shoots right of center. The POI is now in the center of the target. The POI is also about 4" high at 50 yards...

First black powder rifle, headed to the range.

I just finished watching a very interesting video "Everything a muzzleloader needs to know about black powder" I put the link here: Everything a Muzzleloader Shooter Needs to Know about Black Powder He explains the differences between the different sizes, formulation, burn, and pretty much...

First black powder rifle, headed to the range.

Man I believe it! When we were back east this spring we were amazed at how much was actually rural once you get away from the coast. We were in New York when we decided to go to Mackinac Island. We stayed in St. Ignas for 4-5 days and did the tourist thing. When we left we thought we would do...
