    .36 cal caplock loads

with small caliber guns I normally start at 15 grains and work up to 30 in five grain increments. what is the twist rate? once you establish a powder charge that works try a different patch thickness or lube. only change one thing at a time and keep good notes on your targets. what is the twist...

    Nice tools

any width is most useful for gouges? I currently use a hammer and chisel for engraving and have a ball vise. I might get some transfer paper to help with my drawing.

    Nice tools

I have decided to sell some of my revolvers since I don't shoot them. this means I have some cash to spend on some nice to have tools and components. I am thinking of getting a complete set of gouges in wither 3mm or 6mm a nice set of rifflers to clean up around carvings. any other tools you...

    Lipstick on a pig

I have given away the rifles I have made so far. keeps me from constantly being reminded of my mistakes and shortcomings. also don't have the temptation to redo things. I don't like to look back.

    Tamales in the Southwest

I love making tamales. I highly recommend buying a masa spreader on amazon. is cheap and makes getting an even layer spread easy. If you end up enjoying them I can recommend the cook book tamales 101. one of my favorites is roasted poblano and cheese.

    Drilling a Touch Hole

I just drill the hole. if the gun has an issue down the line a touch hole line can be installed but I don't see the need for it right away.

    Plans and Inspiration

inspired by the work a lot here do. my first was just what parts I could get cheapest and figuring out how to make them fit together. look at the pictures of the different schools and pick one you like. I really like Emmitsburg long rifles.

    What blows me away...

I think another part of the story is peoples modern perception of tolerances. things made with machines often hold tolerances greater than .01 of an inch. and that is necessary for things to fit together properly because they are assembled by someone else with parts off of another machine. but...

    Cleaning up Brass Castings

for anybody coming along that wants to build a gun a wax cast part is a lot easier to clean up than a sand cast one.

    New Builder

Welcome. a class is a great way to start. The best advice everyone will give you is to slow down and don't try to rush through the work. much harder to do than many think. what has worked well for me is set aside 30-60 minutes a day to work on the gun. set a alarm and when it goes off you stop...

    MUZZLELOADING BUILDERS SUPPLY

I have never had a problem ordering from them. I like that they have a book of engraving patterns and patchboxes that are already cut out for various styles.

    Don't Carve That Stock!

This is an attitude that really frustrates me. nobody gets to be good at something without practice. My carving and engraving is amateurish to be generous but I get better every time I try. it is not sophisticated or a beautiful design or well executed but at least I am making mistakes and...

    Parts shortage?

for wood stocks River valley gunstocks has some really nice maple, cherry, and walnut on hand. I am younger and have been bitten by the building bug. it is hard enough to make something satisfactory to use for yourself it is quite another to make a product good enough to sell. it takes a lot of...
