    stripped out screw hole

Thank you everyone. I am going to drill it out and use a dowl. I am building this gun for a friend and didn't want to do a fix that could fail sometime off in the future.

    stripped out screw hole

I overtightened one of the screws that holds the butt plate on. What is the best way to fix this? drill out and glue in a dowl? drill a hole up from the toe plate and dowl so the screw has cross grain to grab onto? chop a mortice and glue a small block of wood and redrill a pilot hole? Fill the...

    So..... why a muzzleloading?

for me it is arts and crafts. I got into guns and then immediately reloading. I like going through the process of doing things. a muzzleloader is just handloading in the gun. I enjoy casting balls. cutting and lubing patches, and now building guns. gives me a way to spend my time and have...

    It's a question about cleaning

I run it under the faucet at full blast. takes a couple try's but normally breaks lose all of the fowling. water pressure is your friend if you don't want to work hard. can normally get them clean after with just a patch and a q-tip.

One Or Two Bores For Everything?

I would go for a 36 for target, plinking, and small game. Then a 20 gauge for large animals and shooting things that are moving.

    Paste wax on refinished rifle

    I use renaissance wax.

    Pop my cherry

I have found cherry to be easy to carve and shape. it works well just like walnut. Keep your tools sharp and watch grain direction when carving. the tool can slip when transitioning from cutting across the grain to with it. I am a fan of letting cherry darken naturally.

Do you think this would work?

I doubt it will stabilize the bullet. conical need faster rates of twist than round balls.

    new builder

put together a traditions kit either a hawken or crocket. a great lower cost way to dip your toes in the water. there are nicer kits out there but they cost more.

32 Caliber Kibler Southern Mountain Rifle

I have been thinking of one of these as I really like 32 rifles. how heavy is it? and what is the width of the barrel?

A Bad Fly or A Trash Lock?

does the rifle use a set trigger? if it does not you can just get rid of the fly and see if that fixes your issue. if you do have a set trigger, I would take the lock apart and clean and lubricate. the fly might be getting hung up and not moving properly. also check for metal burs. if the issue...

    Is there such a thing?

they need a 1:32 twist to stabilize. any reason you are looking for one?

    Plank Source

Dunlap wood crafts, River valley gunstocks, or tiger hunt. I believe Pecatonica long rifle and tennessee valley muzzleloading list blanks as well. It would be helpful before you call them to know what you can afford, whether you want hard sugar maple or red maple, and how much curl or figure you...

    How does one determine..

make a mark over the center of the tenon on the top of the barrel. using a square measure down to the center of the tenon where the pin should go. put the barrel in the stock and mark the depth and center of the tenon forming a crosshair. then drill with a drill press. if the stock is already...

    How to carve Moldings

use a straight edge or a marking gauge to layout the line. a big help for me is that I don't cut on the line. I keep one of the edges of the gauge on the line. that way I only wonder the width of the line instead of the width of my cutting tool.

Anyone fretting/thinking about building their own muzzleloader?

I think those who want to build a gun should try. I fear more people never start a project because they believe they can't do it than those who truly lack the ability. I am not particularly skilled but if you never try you will never succeed. you will make mistakes along the way and that is ok...
