    Mid Michigan older newbie

And welcome from a SE MI older kinda newbie. Late starter to BP sounds better!

    Spark making other then flint/chert?

SE MI. My “Top 10” is from the internet. Their are several limestone quarries around here and I thought limestone and flint go hand-in-hand. I guess theres a chance *gasp* that the all knowing internet is wrong.

    Refinishing a finished gun stock…

Not always but its there. About a 20% chance in my experience with mine as I stripped the factory finish off all of them. It darkened and had a reddish tone when finished with just BLO. Actually, it was very nice looking but not dark walnut looking which is what I wanted.

    Refinishing a finished gun stock…

BLO will come out of wood - at least 99.9% apparently by looks and stain absorption - but it was a lot of work. Sanding is a obvious option but it removes wood of course. Multiple applications of chemical stripper, with a solvent wipe in between, finishing with the lightest sanding I could get...

Spare parts for the Pedersoli 1861 Springfield?

Another option may be to call IFG (Italian Firearms Group) out of Texas. They are the main importer of the major Italian firearms (black powder) to the USA. I’ve called them direct before and ordered Pedersoli stuff from them. Not parts but it may be worth a try as they were most helpful.

    CLOSED Jaeger ramrod wanted.

Honestly I’ll claim “stupid dummy” here. I didn’t know the “9mm” referred to rod diameter (just measured mine and it’s 9mm) and thought if it was a good replacement TOTW would mention the Jaeger in the sales blurb so I passed. Ordered now. Thank you gentlemen!

    CLOSED Jaeger ramrod wanted.

Finishing up on a Pedersoli Jaeger kit. Fine rifle no problems but, in a attempt to get proactive: Kit came with a fine looking wooden (hickory?) ramrod that is 27.5” long with the usual brass tips however I have heard of them breaking on people during use. Did the usual internet search and came...

    Brown Bess Light Load

This is “official Pedersoli” and quite handy. And 150 grains exceeds Pedersoli’s recommended maximum for the Bess FYI. Pedersoli says their recommended loads provided the best accuracy for them and form a good starting point for load development.

    Brown Bess Light Load

Optimum load from Pedersoli themselves is 75 grains. Found it to be pretty accurate too - once I figured a good cheek location to use the barrel screw and bayonet lug as sights. Was using paper cartridges with a .69 ball. Recoil was negligible but I’m a husky lad. EDIT: Oops. See you said...

    CLOSED Jaeger sling.

Perfect. Thank you! Dealt with this vendor before (and was happy) but oddly this didn’t pop up in a general internet search. On the way.

    CLOSED Jaeger sling.

Loop top and button bottom. Did a look around the electronic world and the only one I could find is from GG Goodwin. Sure its top quality like the rest of his slings but I never know if he is still in business based on communication? Any makers or sellers here?

How do you clean your rifled barrel?

Guess I thought the black powder/rifling required something special. I see I was mistaken!

How do you clean your rifled barrel?

Thank you gentleman! It’s a Pedersoli Jaeger kit.

How do you clean your rifled barrel?

Alrighty then. I’ll carry on and see how it goes.

How do you clean your rifled barrel?

As above. Veteran of cleaning smoothbores (warm water and soap, Ballistol, Hoppes, jag, patches) but now have a .54 cal rifled kit inbound. How do you ensure there is no corrosive powder residue left in the rifling? With the smoothbore, even after the warm water and soap flush, the first...

    Yea pricey. Stupidly pricey.

    POLISHING THE PRIMING PAN

Just shot today with a musket with a kinda rough pan. Between shots the burnt powder is tougher to clean/brush out of the pan. Is it a big deal? Maybe not. Would I like it to be clean with a simple swipe for multiple practical reasons during a shoot. For me “Yes certainly” so a simple polish...

    POLISHING THE PRIMING PAN

Well polishing pans (got at least one that visually looks rough) has been added to the winter projects list.

    Pedersoli Jaeger kit: Any tips?

Finished my Brown Bess kit a couple weeks ago and, with winter approaching, decided to get my last gun (ever!) on my list: a Pedersoli Jaeger in kit form. When I did the Bess kit I found a thread here by david_person (on making the Bess more historical looking) to be invaluable. Any tips for...

    Pedersoli Jaeger or (future?) Baker?

Looking to make my (almost certainly last) flintlock purchase. Have plenty of smoothbores and want to get something rifled with a expectation of accuracy. Was waiting for the (mythical?) up and coming Pedersoli Baker and also looked at the Baker kits from TRS. Then started looking at the...
