    Flintlocks Anonymous

Centerfire guy for my entire life then less then two years ago I discovered the beauty and art of the flintlock and ain’t looked back. Course I’m keeping the large majority of my centerfire stuff for “practical reasons” but, except for a monthly check up and wipe down, they don’t leave lock up...

    Flintlocks Anonymous

Errr. If having 3 flintlocks is “crazy” then I am in serious trouble.

Any other heretics out there that oil their barrels?

CLP (oil) both inside and out on my barrels with a dry patch punch prior to shooting. If I’m doing a lot of steady shooting with a certain gun then I switch the CLP for Ballistol in between sessions. Been told (how true I don’t know) that Ballistol is no good “long term.” Don’t entirely buy it...

    Muzzleloader as art

I certainly do…and dote on them accordingly. :)

Non-Firing replica 1766 Charleville Infantry Musket

The information is out there for all to see or to guess and surmise. Plus user anecdotes some of which may even be true. No mysteries anymore. Or lack of opinions. Buy what you want. Shoot what you want. No one cares. It’s your choice.

    “Armory Bright” metal finishes…

    Your theory makes much sense.

    “Armory Bright” metal finishes…

Own several muzzleloaders with Armory Bright finishes on the barrels. Seems I have always lived in a humid environment and have been around for some decades but I’m no metal expert of metallurgist. Why doesn’t the barrel or “bright metal” on a muzzleloader rust easily? Or will it if given half...

Bought an incomplete project gun for USD65 - It has issues! Advice requested

Did someone try to make the stock for a assorted collection of parts he had on hand? Pics seem fuzzy on my end but that doesn't look like a factory stock. Looks real rough. If so wood is much easier to work and mold. Changing the metal would be the last thing I’d do. Better to change to wood to...

Non-Firing replica 1766 Charleville Infantry Musket

Somewhat related: I have seen multiple vids over the past couple years from multiple people who have actively tried to blow up muzzle loading barrels by all sorts of no-no’s. Blockages, misloads, even packing the barrel absolutely full of black powder and besides a hellacious recoil 90% of the...

    Cleaning Brass Furniture

Many good cleaning products and all will work. Have done shiny and have attempted the “mellow aged looked” (not shining) but find the mellowing/aged process looks splotchy and unkept. Maybe I’m not waiting long enough. But anyway my question: After shining has anyone tried coating shined brass...

Non-Firing replica 1766 Charleville Infantry Musket

Well. I’m a little speechless after reading that but getting my second wind. My point was the concept of barrel proofing, how it is done, and what the proof marks mean to that barrel versus non-proofed untested barrels made to completely unknown standards and by unknown methods.

    Good to hear.

Non-Firing replica 1766 Charleville Infantry Musket

Lots of info flying back and forth. Maybe I need more coffee because I am not sure where we are landing here. FWIW (knowing nothing of Indian export law) I was told point blank by one of the Canadian importers/sellers of these muskets that there are no touch holes so THEY can sell them - to the...

SOLD Pedersoli Kentucky Flintlock .45 Caliber

Is that the original finish or has it been redone?

Military Heritage 1766 Charlieville round ball size

Loading “historically” you will use .65 caliber ball (approx) with a paper cartridge. If using a patch .675 ball is recommended. You may play a bit with patch thickness depending on your exact bore diameter and “how tight” a fit you want.

    Pedersoli Shortages

Huh. Well I have four and all are just fine. Not a single problem and all are beautifully made. If your friend still has “Pedes” he’s trying to give away give him my name. ;)

Traditions vs Pedersoli ease of lock operation

Many thanks for the pics and details. I may have a winter project. Previously (in fact I even posted here about it) I tried to remove the hammer screw and stopped as I felt like I was going to break something. I was really cranking. Any trick to getting it off?

Can we not call them “****”? :) They are my favorite brand so to speak.

    Perfect! Thank you gentlemen!

    Musket lock design through history…

Fascinating thank you. This whole period is very interesting in firearms design. And I at least guessed the purpose of the “bridle” correctly. If you have any other fascinating tidbits I am all ears.
