    Swiss Powder

Swiss does burn FASTER and some what hotter so you can reduce a typical Goex charge by AT LEAST 10% when using Swiss. NO, I don't work for Swiss! I have made a point of trying most of the powders available over the past three years and Swiss is just stronger, faster and cleaner than anything...

    BEST CONTAINERS

As my Dad used to say "six of one and half a dozen of the other". Both have proven themselves by now to be just fine but I suppose, just for sake of argument you could make the case that at least plastic won't spark if it hits up against metal.

    Smoothbore or Rifle

Should you decide on a rifle may I suggest a larger caliber than .45 - I own two .45's, a .50 and a .54 and the larger caliber rifle handles easier, holds and points easier than either of my .45's (bigger hole = less metal in the barrel). I'm sure all the more experienced muzzle loader folks...

    Pulling a round ball

I have done this more times than I would like to admit! You most certainly can use a threaded adapter screwed into your range rod and pull the ball, provided you are sure to screw the threaded end into the ball several turns and (this is important), lock the range rod end by hooking it into...

    Lee Moulds

I do BOTH, I smoke my molds with a lighter till the cavity is sooty black (which acts to make the cast balls release easier) and then pre-heat them by setting them on the edge of my Lee casting pot the duration of the time I'm casting. I still often have to re-melt the first two or three balls...

The flint that does not fail

You shoot flint for the love of shooting flint, otherwise buy a cap lock or an unmentionable. Getting a flintlock tuned and shooting well is actually part of the whole process of learning to shoot flintlocks. The history and the mechanics and function of the guns is what drew me to them to...

    Delivery lead times?

In North Florida, USPS is absolutely the worst! When the mail truck arrives I like to announce "everybody place your bets now, place your bets"!

L & R lock installed in my GPR

excess650 told you the best thing to do. I have done the exact same installation on a GPR that I used to own. I simply widened the pan a bit and I never had any issue with ignition at all. In fact it was such a good, quick shooter a friend of mine wanted it and made me an offer I could not...

Defarbing a TC or the like

I actually did the peening and draw filing routine on a Lyman Great Plains rifle back about three years ago and it really does work well and save a lot of filing. I then browned the barrel and trigger guard and it looked great. It's not hard, just slow if you do it right.

    Lead melting temp

I used a ladle for some time then spent the money for a Lee bottom pour which I love! I get the best results at right around 700 also. Larger balls I set just a bit higher.

    Charcoal

Be careful if you try using framing wood or lumber from HD or Lowes etc. Most commercial wood has preservatives in them that will give off dangerous fumes when burned. Soft woods are the best for making the kind of charcoal we are talking about. Willow or grape vines are considered by most to...

    range rod

I use a Creedmore range rod with bronze muzzle protector at the range. Since I'm not a hunter just a "Range Lizard" my wood under the barrel ramrods are just for looks.

    Question on mould

Just get a mold and then you can "play" with different patch thickness. Much easier to try different patches than different molds. My 20 gauge/.62 caliber smoothbore likes .600 balls with a rather thick .18 patch. You can get a mold for .595 if you are worried .600 might be too tight for your...
