    Underhammer pistol

I have one of those, the original handle was too small for me to hold well. So I tossed it and made a new handle that was bigger and fit my hand better. Since you are going to make a new handle might as well make it a good one. Back in the day these underhammers were also called "Boot...

    Fire Danger?

Shoot your muzzleloader at night, full dark. Observe the shower of sparks. If the woods are dry enough that a spark off a rim of a flat tire can start a fire, you might not want to try it.

    Barrel length

I built a 20 gauge fowler with a 48" barrel. As I got older the gun got too hard to hold. Now its a 36" barrelled fowler.

    Trigger pull question

I like a single trigger that is stiff enough that I can shoot it while wearing gloves. If you are going to be deer hunting, odds are that it will be cold. Hair triggers and gloves do not work well together.

    Charleville sight picture

You can scribe a groove on the tang at the rear of the barrel and use that for a sight reference for horizontal hold. Or you can remove the tang bolt and replace it with bigger headed bolt and use the slot as a sight reference. You will need to find a sight picture that works for you...

    Flint to frizzen spacing...

BTW, if your flint is too short, use JB Weld and glue a matchstick on the back side.

    Shooting sporting clays with muzzleloader

I saw a guy who mounted a modern shotshell reloader on an old two wheel golf cart. He could reload his double barrel shotgun fast enough to keep up with the Skeet crowd

Where do you store your powder?

Yes, heat won't cause it to cook off, only a spark. For that reason do not store it with primers or caps.

Where do you store your powder?

Here's a long story about black powder and fires. Years and years ago, a friend had a hundred pounds of blackpowder stored in an old steel safe in his freestanding workshop out behind his house. He lived way out in the country with no one else living nearby. The workshop caught fire. When...

    Tower Pistol Load Recommendations?

The barrels were OK, everything else was junk. FWIW. I scrapped all the springs, tumbler, sear and frizzen. Cleaned up the inside of the lockplate and drilled new holes and threaded them to take Siler parts. It worked and I wound up selling it to a PYRATE reenactor who was never going to...

    Tower Pistol Load Recommendations?

I've had two of those. None of the interior parts had been hardened and one had been left on full **** for 20 years. After massive work on the lock, replacing all the springs, guts and frizzen with Siler parts I did get one to go off reliably. Load it with 15 grains of 2F and buckshot and...

    Cleaning review please

I use a mix of 50% 2-stroke motor oil and 50% kerosene to keep the inside of my barrels from rusting. Never had a problem. This oil mix makes a good penetrating oil for the operating parts and protects the barrel as well.

Just ordered a .69cal bluderbuss. loads used?

It is not easy to aim a blunderbuss, the bell at the muzzle makes it difficult. I don't know how big your lady is but an 80 grain charge and a full load of buckshot might be more recoil than she will be comfortable with. The blunderbuss is a short range weapon, meant to intimidate people...

    Broken side plate bolt

There's not a lot of room for ramrod, bolt and lock in the stock. Something usually has to give. I have seen rifles with side plate bolts that were thinned down. I have also seen ones that had the bolt filed with a flat spot, a mark on the bolt head lets you know which way to turn it. I...

    question on mildew on tent

A buddy of mine inherited an old mildewed and leaky Bakers tent. He set it up in a field and soaked it with Canvak that he got from Cabelas. A few weeks later we were both camping in it in the middle of the dangdest downpour and we stayed dry. Canvak is good stuff.

Fixed Inaccuracy...why didn't I think of it before?

My .54 likes 55 grains of 3F at 25 yards and 75 grains of 3F beyond that. I shoot 90 to 110 grains of 2F in my Brown Bess. I think you were loading with too much powder.

    Anybody made a roundball mold?

I made one out of some soapstone that I had. Used a Dremel to hollow it out by eyeball. It didn't work all that well but I did have a more or less round ball that would go down the muzzle. If I was to do it again, I'd concentrate on making a Buckshot mold instead.

    Haddaway Lock.

Russ Hamm made locks. He may have made good ones but that wasn't what I got. There was no way to harden the frizzen so that it would spark.

    SEEKING: English long gun advice

On the other hand. We are all stuck at home with the Virus thingy going around. You can either watch TV, work remotely or fix a gun. I vote to fix the gun. You will learn new life skills, the gun will be fun to shoot and you will have bragging rights. It's your gun, who cares if it's worth...

    44 Cal Loading Question

An empty brass .38 shell makes a perfect powder measure for my 1858. I got real fancy and soldered a handle on it. I load that amount of powder (not even sure how many grains it is anymore) a felt wad and a .457 ball in mine. Just for the record, it is a lot easier to load the cylinder out of...
