go with one with a ram rod. no sense in taking the gun apart every time. I had not heard that pietta is no longer making the 1863 pocket.

Dream Tools--What do you yearn for?

power tools scare me. but a slow speed grinder would be nice and a power engraver looks like it would be easy to use. I would one day love to get set up to make barrels but have no time, space, knowledge, or money for that.

    South central Wisconsin

I normally shoot my under hammer and 32 cal crocket rifle as well as cap and ball revolvers. it would be fun to shoot steel for the first time as my range is paper targets only.

    Hazmat fees are CRAZY!

that seems high but the vender sets the fee. the reason for the fee is shipping hazmat is more involved and demanding than regular shipments. there are more regulations in place to try and keep the public safe.

What have you done to further the muzzleloading hobby?

gave a pound of powder and a tin of caps to someone so they could dig their Hawken out of the closet and go shoot it. that gun I am told hasn't been out in over a decade. sometimes it is about pulling people back in.

Soldering barrel lugs and sight, success!

I suck at soldering. glad you had a good go at it. I use metal banding that is meant to secure items to pallets for a spring to hold parts for soldering. same idea but is more flexible and free.

I will name cars but have never thought to do it for a gun. if i had to name them all i would be in trouble. I don't think I would remeber which one is which.

    Who else shoots BIG bore?

I want to build a big bore in a year or two. but I am having trouble deciding on caliber. the bigger you get the more expensive and more recoil. but how much is enough for the shock and wow factor to be fun and how much is no longer fun? I have a couple 58 and would want a good step up from...

    Tips for new builders?

for videos bill Rabey has many great ones, duilist 1854, grumpy gunsmith of williamsburg. this is absolutely something you can learn as you go. I am not good at many things but I didn't let that stop me. just look at my attempt at soldering. yet the gun still turned out decent. if you run into...

Thoughts on 1858 Remington revolving Carbine

I have and shoot one. a lot of fun for shooting off hand. it is accurate at 50 yards. I don't shoot it further than that because ii still need a lot of practice off hand at 100. you will get stuff blown at your face so I wear a bandana and safety glasses. I have found colt style guns with a...

    Tool recommendations for Newbie

a hand plane for leveling the stock and removing a lot of material, chisels in the size of 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, a couple gouges. beaver craft are cheap and acceptable but only available in some sizes, a Japanese rasp and a half round. some kind of drill and bits of many sizes, any kind of sharpening...
