    Up and running.

Bridle was broken in 3 pieces. Wire welded it back together and filed back to shape and drilled new pivot hole. Used all original screws to put it back together. Only thing not original to rifle is the hammer screw and the main spring.

    Up and running.

Got to shoot the rifle yesterday. Fired it about 20 times using a .283 ball with .018 pillow tick patch and 20 gr of 2f Goex. Couldn’t get a good group. I think the reason for the poor group was the fact that I was using precut patch and I couldn’t get the patch to stay centered on the ball when...

    Up and running.

From the 3 shots I got with this rifle before it broke the bridle it was dead on at 25 yds. If everything works out I will get to fire it in the next couple of days. Hope it stays true to form. I just sat and stared at it for an hour today.

    Up and running.

When I got the rifle it was so caked in dried oil or lube that you couldn’t tell if it had rifling in the barrel and a lot of it had ran down the comb on the stock that it looked like rot on the wood. Cleaned the stock with Go-Jo hand cleaner back down to the original finish and stopped there...

    Up and running.

Finally after 7 months from finding an original J.Henry & Son .30 cal it is ready to make smoke again. Bag made by me and a repurposed copper powder flask.

    Found in antique shop

Don’t think it was originally made for a powder or ball horn. Handle seems plenty strong to handle both tho.

    Found in antique shop

Found this in an antique shop. Full of shot. Anybody ever seen a horn like this. Made out of copper and soldered. No rivets. About 8” tall and a little over 2” at base.

    Round ball spin.

Want to thank you guys for all the responses to this post. We are not going to try firing any of the hollow point round balls as we realize the we would be waisting time and lead in this endeavor. This bunch of old bp shooters have enjoyed all the responses. Thank you.

    J. Henry & Son lock problem

Lock is back together and it works perfect. All parts in this lock are original to the rifle except the hammer screw. Got the hammer screw out and threads repaired. Just waiting on a screw from Dixie Gun Works and this rifle will be in good shooting condition. I did not totally restore this...

    J. Henry & Son lock problem

Decided that the lock wasn’t any good like it was and didn’t think I could hurt it any more than it already was. A friend and I got the lock apart and found the bridle to be in 3 pieces. There had been a repair done on it looks like about a hundred years ago. Got those pieces lined up and held...

    Round ball spin.

Well we are getting closer to firing the hollow point round ball. We will short start the ball and we have a tool that will drill the hollow point before we seat the ball on the powder. We will fire 4 or 5 of these to see how this plays out and then we have made a small cone to insert into the...

    Round ball spin.

We will do that as soon as we get this hollow point thing worked out. Will set up a time line at the coffee shop in the morning.

    Definitely will do that.

    J. Henry & Son lock problem

Got to shoot this rifle 3 times before it broke. At 25 yds it put all 3 rounds in a 1” bullseye. Will not shoot this rifle a whole lot but I do want it in shooting condition.

    Round ball spin.

We are pretty easily entertained. We are all retired and usually looking for something to do that we haven’t tried yet. We haven’t tried this yet but if people keep telling us we shouldn’t do we are going to end up doing it just because.

    Round ball spin.

During our discussion on this subject at the coffee shop we figured that the only way to get the hollow point in the center of the ball would be to drill the hole after the ball had been short started. Done figured how to do this and have the tool to do just that. Of course we haven’t loaded and...
