    Checking the twist rate on my Cabelas 50 cal Hawkins

    Investarms also made a short barreled Hawken with a 1 in 22 or so twist and a chromed bore. Try as I may, I never got that to shoot any kind of conical better than 3 inches at 50 yards from the bench.

    Maxi Ball and 54 GPR

    As someone has already mentioned, the maxi does well at 50 yards but you have to push the powder charge up 90 grains. FWIW, I have no problem killing pigs and hogs with patched round ball and 70 gns of powder.

    My .54 New Englander likes .530 ball and .013 patch. At 50 yards I use 60 gns of 3F and get one inch groups from a bench. I use TOW mink oil on the patch and swab between shots with a damp patch. For 100 to 150, I use 400gn maxi ball and 100 gns of 3F. You have to wear a pad to shoot this...

    Best ball/patch for TC New Englander?

    My .50 cal N.E. likes .490 ball and .015 patch. My .54 cal N.E. likes .530 ball and .013 patch. Using 60 grains of 3F these are both 1" group shooters from the bench. For 100 to 150, I use 100gns and Maxi balls. They group about three inches with my late sixties eyes and open sights. John

    No capper works on 1858 Remmy

    I have researched this pretty thoroughly and found that no capper works on the 1858 Remington. The Ted Cash in line works fine on Colt 1860 etc. Regards, John

    fix for moisture

    Hi, New to the forum but 50 year BP shooter. If you have some desicant crystals, you can drop a small container (pill bottle with 1/16 holes drilled in it) into your Pyrodex container and it will absorb any moisture and bring the powder close to normal. You can also do this with Holy Black but...
