Beef Tallow instead of Mutton for wonder wads???

I agree if you only lubed them with bees wax. However, most of the concoctions I have made require, tallow, oil, or fat of some sort.

Beef Tallow instead of Mutton for wonder wads???

If you use the "dry lubed" wads, they should work just fine. I wouldn't use anything with oil or tallow as it would seep into your powder.

    Pyrodex in a Flintlock

I have a pound of T7 that I used for hunting loads. Since I don't hunt anymore, I probably work up some loads for my target rifle or shoot it in my Remington Beals revolvers. I used it because it was the only way I could get the 700 FPE Marylandistan requires for handgun hunting.

    Pyrodex in a Flintlock

I don't discount what you are percieving but the Safety Data Sheets for BP, Prodex and T7 show Pyrodex to have a lower auto ignition temp than T7. BP is 392 degrees F Pyrodex is 740 degrees F T7 is 770 degrees F Based on the data, Pyrodex should be easier to ignite than T7.

    Pyrodex in a Flintlock

This works quite well and Pyrodex P is readily available. Don't us Pyrodex Rifle as you will get delayed ignition since it burns slower.

    Pyrodex in a Flintlock

My normal load in my GP .50 cal flinter is 60 grains of 3F for 50 yard target shooting. I got a good deal on a case of Pyro P some time ago and worked up a load that gives me the same ballistics. I throw 10 grains of 3F and 40 grains of Pyro and my loads print to the same POI as 60 grains of...

    Keeping your powder dry

This is how our forefathers did it. They didn't have desiccant and apparently didn't need it.

Beef Tallow instead of Mutton for wonder wads???

I keep all my lube making supplies in the basement fridge. That way I don't have to look all over for the makings. 😉

    Casting Issue

Nice work. I find making larger bullets and balls easier than making smaller ones. .31 cal used to drive me nuts I've since sold the rifle so I have less stress in my retirement. 😉

    Casting Issue

Not for me either. I don't know if it was the arthritis or turning 70 that made the difference. :D

If you use beeswax for a flux, keep some match heads on your bench and throw one in with the beeswax. This will ignite and keep the beeswax from smoking.

    Casting Issue

Try running a scribe along the vent lines. It seems to me, the air is not getting out of your mold causing the lead to not flow properly.

    Casting Issue

I suggest that a required tool when casting is a lead thermometer. Not the electronic type but the type with a dial and stem. Knowing the exact temperature of your melt makes for better casting and less wasted energy. The reason I don't recommend the electronic type is that, for some reason...

Nice job. Beautiful rifle and deer.

    Casting Issue

I cast with six and eight cavity molds and always work two molds at a time. After I fill the mold, I lay it on a hotplate that is adjusted for 350 degrees. This keeps the mold from cooling too fast. I start with the melt temp at about 800 and turn it down as the balls fill out to about 750...

    Brownells Oxpho-blue ???

If you want to get a long lasting deep blue/black color do the following. Get some 00 and 0000 steel wool and wash a few pads with degreaser and let them dry. Clean and degrease your rifle barrel and other parts. Using the Gel bluing agent, dip a piece of steel wool in the get and apply to...
