Specific rifling depth for hollow base/flat base muzzloader bullets

I am shooting a traditions mountain rifle, with a 418 grain grease groove bullet. These are poured with a 40-1 alloy, slightly harder than pure lead. There is a lot of pressure on the base of a bullet during ignition. However nobody know for sure until they experiment with loads and...

Specific rifling depth for hollow base/flat base muzzloader bullets

My small amount of experience thinks you will be fine. I am shooting a .50, my barrel measure .499/.517. I size my bullets to .5005. They seem to seal up just fine with a overpowder wad.

Best way to blacken a new sight.

The original setup was black sight and cerakote brown barrel.

Best way to blacken a new sight.

The barrel is browned/cerekote. So either black or brown will work. Looks like I need to order a blueing or browning solution?

Best way to blacken a new sight.

Bought a new rear sight. Is looks to come unfinished as cast. What is the best way to darken or blacken/brown the sight?

Heaviest Bullets For .50 Caliber 48" Twist

418 grain I bullet is showing good results, still working with it a bit.

    eBay score.

Less than $60 shipped. Listed had it a Lyman. Fairly sure it is a T/C by the anodized finish and square sprue plate. Also don’t know anyone else who made such a thing.

I picked up, what u believe to be a T/C Maxi hunter mold today off of eBay.

    Sloppy rear sight….

I talked with a few others with the same issue. After confirming my CVA MR sight would fit I set out to find another CVA sight. Found a new sight set on EBAY this morning. Lucky draw to find new old stock….

    Sloppy rear sight….

The dove tail on My Traditions is .025 deeper than on my CVA. I looked at a few other photos online, it seems they are all cut deeper as shown in the photo. The 2 piece sight is a problem when the two half’s are not a tight slip fit. This is one place where a bit of play/slip is unacceptable.

    Sloppy rear sight….

It is a tad deeper than my Cva mountain rifle. The CVA and Traditions are not the same sight. CVA is a one piece and the traditions is a 2 piece. Both the front and rear dovetails are the same depth.

    Sloppy rear sight….

After 2 calls Traditions is sending a new sight, when they get one in stock.

    Sloppy rear sight….

It is a new rifle, I will call Traditions this morning, will see if they are helpful or not. I have tried shimming with aluminum. I was not able to get it tight enough, still had a small amount of play. I will explore some more option after my call today.

    Sloppy rear sight….

It does not matter how tight the screw is, it still moves. The sight vs dovetail adapter tolerance is not tight enough. I will double check my CvA mountain rifle later, however I believe they one is a machined fit and not sloppy. That screw is not enough to keep the sight from twisting a bit...

    Sloppy rear sight….

Finally got around to shooting the Tradition mountain rifle a bit more with my cast bullets. Last time out I noticed some horizontal stringing on my group, I did not take notice as the wind was blowing a good bit. This time I noticed it again. Toward the end of my session I noticed my rear sight...

    Hornady Great Plains 385gr loads?

Yay I found his NASA lube modification thread. I have some NASA lube on order. I will play with the mixture to get to where I want with a hunting bullet.

    Hornady Great Plains 385gr loads?

Two questions, what is the special lube? Does vacuum sealing prevent the oxidation on the bullets?

    Lead alloys for testing

I just ordered a hardness tester from CowboyBullets.com (cabintree). I am curious if anyone has some known 40-1 & 20-1 bullet/samples I can use to test/calibrate my new tester and to gain the feel of it using a known alloy for reference.

    Hornady Great Plains 385gr loads?

Lots of folks shooting 70-80 grs with that bullet.

    Traditions Mountain Rifle

Was able to get the new MR out for a few rounds while on a camping trip last week. Fired maybe a dozen or so rounds through it. The barrel really needed a good cleaning or I would have shot more. The last inch or two in the chamber was pretty rough/gritty. My mistake for not giving it a solid...
