What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

I received a 3/8 inch arch punch today. I disassembled an old fedora style Cabelas wool hat I never wear, soaked a few pieces in some LOOB in the oven, then punched out a gross of wads on the tabletop drill press. It just happened to come out to 144 pieces by sheer luck. Then, after walking...

You have very smooth skin and hands for a gunsmith.... and clean fingernails, too!

Lemme guess…. No employee available to cut the patch material? It makes me wonder why they bother to complain about shoplifters when there’s no one watching the store.

Nice video. I think if I stayed kneeling for that long, you’d just have to cover me up right there, ‘cuz I’d never be able to get back up again! 😬

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

I was spraying fruit trees the other day when I got a phone call. Shut off the tractor and was wandering around while on the phone. I noticed some black rocks in my driveway…. I reached down and picked up some black flint. Then another, then another, and before I knew it, I had two pockets...

Powder Valley or Grafs have been having stock of RWS caps. They’re not a scam site. Just expensive!

Thanks for that, Pete… I was considering a braided leather handle… just couldn’t remember how to do one, but you prompted me to look it up, and of course, there was a video online about how to do it. 😬

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

I would, but I don’t have room to secure the rope on the left side. I put a bracket to hold the pistol stand on that side and it fits tight against the side. Whatever I use for handles will have to be surface mounted. My original plan was to use a shoulder strap. I may still go that route...

Woodsrunner, Is this normal for walnut?

Just FYI, Aqua fortis on cherry wood comes out a deep chocolate brown. Really dark.

I've used that method before, and those two boxes are still going strong after 30+ years. Granted, they haven't seen a lot of use and they've been in my living room most of that time, but saw quite a bit of hard use in the 80s. I made those back when all I had for carpentry tools was a...

Made myself a shooting box for pistol schtuff over the weekend... Not sure what I'm going to do for handle(s) or strap(s) yet. Inspiration will hit me sometime soon. Used some leftover maple from a dresser I'm slowly putting together. Finished it with Aqua fortis and Permalyn.

Got the permalyn lid off, First coat of finish on!

Stain isn't generally applied to the inlets because the aqua fortis that most people used on the originals, and yet today, will rust metal things when in long contact with that type of stain. Best to just apply some finish to those areas.

Got the permalyn lid off, First coat of finish on!

I found that after a few months the lid on my Permalyn can was permanently welded on by the dried finish. I ended up opening the bottom with an old fashioned can opener (that makes the triangle holes) and poured the unused half of the can into an old mushroom jar I had a lid for.

New to BP with a 10 gauge and hopes of a turkey

Cosmoline? I wouldn’t use that unless I was going to store the gun for a few years. Patches wet with water will cut the fouling very nicely, then use a couple dry patches. Then a lightly oiled patch, followed by a dry patch to tidy up. Use a lightly oiled patch to rub the nipple threads...
