Man Died From Muzzle Loader Accident

I didn't see mention of what type ML rifle he had, but agree that leaving a cap on is pure folly. I don't trust unprimed flinters either. Mine self primes about 3 out of 5 shots, whether I intend it or not. When not primed, it's not considered legally loaded here but I'd want a feather tight...

What do you carry in your patch box when hunting?

A while back, I saw one here that had2-3 drilled sockets for jag, ball screw and worm, and a plain recess for patches and such. Very organized and possibly less likely to dump if it popped open. Had to be a fairly thick stock. Thought I'd saved the picture but haven't found it yet.

    Source for Vent Plug Feathers

Just watch as you walk. You'll soon get sense of the size you need. I found a trove along a river w/ several flocks of Canada Geese. Bigger ones, I cut into rough quill pens, to the delight of young nephews. Chicken feathers work, too. I got some stained clusters (packaged as craft/cat toy...

    Feather Hole

I have used the feather trick to plug the touchhole, when carrying it loaded but not primed or when freshening the edge on a flint, to exclude humidity and as a safety. I've never found a really satisfactory place to stow spare feathers, so have thought about adding a feather hole. Mine's a...

    Cleaning question

Check out the clamp-on flushing rig to avoid the risk of getting water in the lock inlet or barrel channel. I got mine from The Log Cabin, but I think Track of the Wolf carries them too. About $25, as I recall. Paid for itself on the first use. Just pull the lock (you're going to clean it...

    Powder tattoos

Tried firing my flint pistol once, Hollywood fashion, rested across my left forearm. Forgot a glove & must have cocked my wrist a bit. Missed enjoying the full touchhole blast but got a good spray of pan powder sparks, most still burning. Lesson well learned; took a good while w/ needle &...

    Fire Danger?

I wouldn't do it, were I you. It can only take one spark, landing in the wrong spot, unnoticed or overlooked. Shooting at game, my attention is on it at the very time i should be checking for any sign of a moldering patch or something dry that caught a bit of muzzle excess. If that game is a...

    My holster is too hard

Howard Leather Conditioner is good for controlled easing of hard leather. A bit at a time; massage it in; repeat as needed. I find it more controllable than neatsfoot.

    smoke pipe

I don't smoke either, but enjoy the smell of someone else's pipe. A fine period pipe like that and this shared informastion could tempt me to try - if only to round out the persona. Those are classics. I'll wait to see your second batch. Thanks for sharing, all.

    Anybody guess what this is?

Perhaps it was built for a Confederate order but, for some reason wasn't delivered- or deliverable.

What can you use on a Powderhorn to prevent it from cracking?

Given what a horn is made of...& what neatsfoot oil is made from...I'd be tempted to wipe mine w/ prime neatsfoot (NOT neatsfoot compound, which has other stuff in it).

    Horn safe paint remover?

The afters look great. The slight double curve should let it fit well. Rework it to suit your own taste; carry it w/ pride.

Trying to make a peep sight, should be easy.

Following. I use an EyePal & swear by it. I'm nearsighted, but cataracts make a memory of clear sight pictures. EyePal sharpens the sights enough for me to shoot respectably. These are all interesting; I've played with making a peep sight, but do not want to drill or cut another dovetail until...
