Where do you store your powder?

I'm intrigued by reading of the system used by Lewis & Clark: Lead ccontainers with enough powder to fire the bullet which could be cast from the container. I don't recall mention of a wooden keg, for storage once the lead was breached, but, unless each powder container was doled out to powder...

Bought a new to me rifle!

Beautiful hunter's rifle. Long, lean, and unadorned.

    Priming Your Rifle

I have a couple of priming horns and a brass pan charger that I use, depending on the situation and my mood, or I'll use my main horn to prime. I find my rifle likes a small pile (c. 3-4 gr) at the very outer end of the pan. When I use the main horn, I sometimes get too much but I've gotten...

    4 chambers at once!

While in high school, had an original 1860 Army Colt chain on me while I was learning it's quirks. Think it was 3 chambers, but it's been a while. I did learn, and remember, the lesson though. Never loan tools.

    Rifle will not fire?

Good advice, but "sending" a loaded barrel is dangerous, illegal & could expand this problem to a real nightmare

    Rifle will not fire?

I've read that Pyrodex pellets only have the BP on one end, to ignite more easily, then light Pyrodex. Might you have gotten them in upside down? It's irrelevant to your current problem, but could be important if you decide to use up what you have - or can't get BP readily.

    Whiskey Picks

I carry a smith-made, twisted iron pick (for show and occasional use) but usually use one hammer-formed from copper wire. My whisk is mule hair in a brass ferrule. I use it to clean up excess prime when priming from my horn and getting sloppy. Both on chain hung on my bag strap.

    gun from firewood

Well done, sir! Looks great. I like the proportions and the finish. Anticipating a report on how it shoots.

Boy did I get lucky or what

I bought one of those a while back. Same problem. Tried everything I could think of (at the time) including filing clearance (kit gun- no lit) & trying stronger springs. Put it aside & gave up;- it was only $15 at a yard sale. Recently, I found a schematic. I saw that mine lacked a "T" shaped...

    New guy with questions.

Log Cabin, in Lodi, OH has good black flints. If you tell them what brand/model you are shooting, they can help you choose the best size. As for priming, 2F will work, or you could grind some down to a finer powder for priming. Do a very little at a time, using wood or brass vessels (I've...

Replacement rod for my Traditions Hawken Woodsman?

I've had great success getting good rods from Log Cabin. Straight grain that I needed to taper to fit. Haven't had one break.

First Muzzleloader, anyone heard of Mont Swasey?

That's a very nice looking rifle. .45 is deer legal here. .38 or .40, however you seal them to the bore - which you can do with a thick enough patch (you might even consider trying leather patching on the smaller balls)-are not. It's adequacy has been discussed here, with pics of very still...

    Resolving Sticky Gun Purchase

No one seems to suggest it yet, so I'll crawl out on the limb. If the balls are as easily moved as you describe, have you considered padding the floor - to protect both the muzzles and the floor;n upending the rifle, and carefully pound it on the floor, to let gravity extract the balls? Given...

    Resolving Sticky Gun Purchase

Fishdfly beat me to suggest Log Cabin Shop, Lodi, Ohio, but I'm pretty sure both Track of the Wolf and Dixie Gun Works also carry this useful tool. It's basically the same rig some bicyclists carry for fast refill in flats that they've fixed on the road. One alert, not all CO2 cylinders will...

    Resolving Sticky Gun Purchase

Since neither grease gun nor compressor are at hand, why not buy one of the CO2 cylinder-based ejectors. I've used mine successfully on a .50 flintlock rifle and a .58 CW repro musket. It should work well on yours, especially since you've established that the balls are mobile. You might not...

Is loading from the flask really that dangerous???

Last year I watched a Youtube video where they intentionally ignited a couple of horns to test (as I recall) the glued vs. pinned end plug question. Impressive explosions. Didn't resolve much; shredded both horns. Lots of shards (shrapnel) & couldn't find one of the plugs. When I started w/...
