Traditions Deerhunter - is it worth attempting to improve it?

You said you lacked tools and experience working with them. A fairly simple project could supply you with an inexpensive, basic spring clamp, until you can afford a formal one and get you some basic tool time. Get a file (for metal) and a piece of sheet metal, an 1/8" thick or a bit more...

    Double Barrel Muzzleloader Identification

If your son has a collection, presumably he knows to verify that it's unloaded. Run the ramrod as far as it will go down the barrels; note where the muzzle falls along the rod; then hold it against the outside of the barrel. It should reach the breech/nipple. A visual check should be easier w/...

Where do you store your powder?

The inevitable later conversations with police and his insurance agent were probably a bit stressful too.

Where do you store your powder?

I have mine in an insulated -unlocked- "fireproof" document safe, stored well away from my home. As a former volunteer firefighter, if I had it inside, I'd have to post a discrete " in case of fire" warning - which could still attract unwanted attention.

    Rifles of the 1830s

I find it interesting - and disconcerting- that in the last B&W sketch, the face looks more like that of a non-indian. The hairline on the forehead, and what looks like a moustache, seem outr of place & at odds w/ all the other versions shown. Scalp-Lock? At first glace it appeared to me that...

    Help with stuck bullet

Think of the whole episode as an excuse to meet a whole new group of friends/mentors and let us blather. You are also correct, seeing it as a learning experience. Count on one nearly every time you take your rifle out. None of the useful toys you bought for this were wasted investments; you...

WANTED .45 or .50 Flintlock longrifle

Incredible grain in that stock. I like the lines of the rifle too, but you are right, I've not seen the like of that grain.

    help with jaeger sight

You might build the top of the sight up with silver solder, then file it into shape. That would give you a "silver" bead effect. Alternately, carve a sliver of antler/bone to glue/epoxy on the top for the same effect.

    question on mildew on tent

Bright sunlight is effective at killing mildew. It won't fade the stains much, exccept over time. Chlorine bleach, strong enough to kill the mold is too hard on the fabric, imho. If you use it, use a weak solution but use enough to soak the canvas thoroughly; what you need to kill are the...

    Show off your first muzzleloader!

I echo Toot's comment. When I was first corrupted, only originals were available, in one condition or another. My first was(I was told) a British offer's fusil/forager's fusil. 'The muzzle is worn paper thin. I recently used a simple wedge gauge to guesstimate .72-75. Still sparks well &...

Thanks for that information. Time for me to do a bit of research.

    .54 CVA Express Rifle

Nice "shotgun"! Kudos. She has a good eye - and stole it. Have twice the fun. Blew up the full picture as far as I could. It looks to me like yours has the register adjustment set screw in the muzzle band; there should be three. Apparently, not all of the CVA's had them but I don't know if...

Help me choose a smoothbore at auction please

The barrel issue might make that one a better buy. Send it to Mr. Hoyt for relining; you might get the best combination, as a shooter.

    Hello from Ohio

Welcome to the addictively involving end of shooting BP, from SW OH. Take your time; listen to the advice here; choose well. It sounds like you are doing it logically; when a rifle fits & speaks to your gut, you will have found the one.

Inherited Cool Rifle But Have No Clue...

If they are closer to you, you could contact the Log Cabin Shop in Lodi, OH. They have a gunsmithing service and could make a similar evaluation. They've been around since the '40's, w/ a rock-solid reputation.

SOLD .50 caliber percussion double rifle, probably CVA

I can't tell from his pictures, but the one I have lacks a rib for; the barrels are held by a "figure 8" band. There are three set screws bearing on the right barrel, to tweak it into register w/ the left. As I understand, they didn't use this feature on all of the doubles. Hope this helps.

Ramrod for loading in the field...

I carry a flexible range rod and a heavy, sectioned, brass cleaning rod (for drawing problem balls), but use my gun's rod for most loading, to build muscle memory (as mine fails). I've broken a couple of wooden rods - species indeterminate, but probably stained hardware birch dowels - (one...
