    Starting fires with patches

I soaked some ticking overnight in a saturated solution of straight borax and water. After it dried completely I cut off a bunch of fraying strings and made a ball with them. It won't burn. I tried to light it with a butane lighter and when the flame is taken away it goes out. Borax is cheap...

    1851 navy hunting

I don't see why not. Archery hunting is a good preparation for handgun hunting in general. Take advice from dangerous game hunters - don't admire your shot, keep shooting until it falls down.

Check the Dawn and water post from French Colonial.

Perhaps of interest, some matchlocks & period accessories

What might be the purpose of the slots in the top of the flash guard? And did that guard maybe get added on? A fine musket you have here. I bet it is shootable but I wouldn't.

    Shot in a pistol

You said "powder, patch, shot and wad". You aren't intending to use the shotgun shell powder are you? The rest of it won't hurt anything even if it doesn't work well.

    Question on Traditions Kentucky

I hope you don't have too much invested in this rifle.

    Question on Traditions Kentucky

Just a thought here, but could the drum be cut off flush with the breech plug and then drilled and tapped for a vent? That would avoid messing with the Traditions breech.

    Matchlock trigger bar installed.

    Looking good.

Powder Inc. doing a little price gouging?

Here you go. It's been done years ago.

    10-Barrel Superposed Matchlock, 60-Shots

A decent match cord won't go out by itself. It will burn until it is stubbed out or you can just cut off the ember and then stomp out the ember.

    New 1851 Navy Holster

That is nice work for sure. Did you also do the checkering?

Good for you. Let us know when you have it in your hands and post some more photos.

    Canvas Type Pistol Cover

Pretty easy to make from an old pant leg. Even I can do it.

What did I buy? Remington New Model 1859?

I bet it came in a presentation case. Does it show any wear at all?

When your range rod doesn't go "clank"

I once popped several caps on a trail walk and then checked for a dry ball. The rod clanked. I shouldn't talk and shoot.

    What to do?

Leave it as is. It's just too far gone.

What did I buy? Remington New Model 1859?

The stampings on the barrel are very nice. Nothing like on an Italian reproduction, at least the ones I can afford. Are you positive that is a reproduction?

    Help with Colt

Mine really doesn't want to stay in so I just remove it. If I take it out on purpose it won't fall out and get lost.

Traditions Shedhorn failing to set off #11 caps

Try seating the cap on the nipple, then lower the hammer gently against it. Push hard on the hammer to get the cap all the way down. It will not go off doing this but keep it pointed down range anyhow. Works for me.

    Walmart caps

Will Walmart do special orders for non-stock items?
