Getting ready to shoot! Which cap and powder?

FWIW, I have two tins of caps - both #11. One is CCI brand and the other Winchester. The CCI's are too small to work well on my .45 rifle but work great on my Pietta cap-and-ball revolver (which actually calls for #10 caps). The Winchesters work great on the rifle and are too loose on the...

    Short Video of my '58

I've shot my Pietta Remington 1858 replica several times now. This is a very short (7 seconds) slow-motion video of it taken with my son's GoPro camera. YouTube Video I only loaded it with a small powder charge with a felt wad on top; no ball at all. I figured it would give a nice muzzle...

    Two Museum Demos

I just went to Fort Jackson, GA and Fort Pulaski, GA. I saw a demo of a cannon firing, two civil war smooth bore firings, and a bayonet drill. Very nice presentations. I recommend them.

    Museum question

Today I was in the old customs house museum in Charleston, SC and saw a Remington revolver in a case just like the one I bought recently. It was labeled "Remington Old Army Revolver" and mentioned that it went into service in 1862. I thought it was the Remington NEW Army. I asked the docent...

    Metal Goex cans

I noticed that there are a few replacement caps that fit Goex powder cans which dispense powder, etc. I thought these were cool but when I bought my first can of Goex, it came in a plastic bottle with a different sized cap. Can you get those old-school metal cans anywhere else?

    Finally Fired a Flinter

This club has some pretty hard-core people in it ”“ I did not see a single store-bought gun. Everyone who showed me his or her gun had either built it or knew who did. As a result, this is a great group to hang out with to learn from. Two guys had .72 caliber guns they were shooting (which I...

    Pistol Repair advice sought

Thanks for the advice. I took this pistol apart this weekend and I’m not sure I want to mess with it any further. The lock is not inlet into the stock at exactly the right spot so that the hammer and nipple don’t line up. It seems to be a problem of bad woodworking. I guess I could try and...

    Finally Fired a Flinter

Indeed! My tutor had already shot in the competition all morning - probably 50 shots or so and his hands were completely black; as if he'd been working on his car engine. The shoulder of his shirt was grimy from where the rifle went against it. And he was very happy. As were they all. Wow...

    Finally Fired a Flinter

I went to a shooting competition with a local club that I'd never met before. After the competition, one friendly member let me shoot his flintlock three times. This was a new experience for me. I shouldn't have done that! Now I'm hooked. He had years of experience and of course his fired...

    Cleaning a Kentucky

Seal the nipple with something! Why didn't I think of that? Good idea - I'm gonna try it.

    Pistol Repair advice sought

I’ve received another brother-in-law gun: a short barreled (6” ?) .45 cal pistol of unknown maker (yet). I haven’t looked at it much except to note that the hammer does not strike the nipple properly. The nipple ends up over near the edge of the hammer face so that if a cap is on, it doesn’t...

    Caps Fire Unreliably

Well, this is an old thread but I have an update. I happened upon a tin of Remington #11 caps (previously I had CCI). I bought these and tried them out. They fit perfectly whereas the CCIs had been super tight. Now the gun fires every time. Now I know.

Didn't think of that. I'll give it a try.

    New Revolver is coming

I've watched a youtube video on making paper cartridges and that looks intriguing. I've also admired the conversion cylinders. But I'll probably just get another normal cylinder one day.

    Cleaning a Kentucky

I have a CVA Kentucky Rifle that I've recently started shooting. The first time I shot it, I took the barrel off for cleaning - it has two small drift pins you have to knock out as well as a couple of screws. I think I read somewhere that removing these all the time could cause them to fall...

    New Revolver is coming

I went out with a group of friends from our church today - out to a cabin in the woods owned by one of the families. I knew they had a small gun range nearby and the owner usually took a few people out there to plink. So I took my black powder rifle and my new revolver. Both were a big hit...

    .454 vs .451 balls

My Pietta Remington New Army came with a bag of .451 balls. They shot fine but I didn't see much of a lead ring. I went out today to buy some more and could only find .454 (Hornady brand). They rammed quite easily and shaved a nice lead ring. They shot fine too.

    Wax Wads?

I used some of those wax seals over the balls today (without a felt wad). Gun shot very well.

    Wax Wads?

Actually BillnPatti, I wouldn't mind learning how to make some wads on my own and on the cheap.

    Kroil for lock lubrication?

My primary hobby is woodworking and this discussion on lubricants reminds me a lot of the same discussions regarding what kind of lubricant to use when sharpening chisels, knives, etc. There seems to be no "one true way". I stopped at a quarry recently where they produce Arkansas whetstones...
