Jim & Barbie Chambers Where Are You?

I'm disappointed, to say the least. What follows is flowing from my mind, without much forethought and worth what you paid for it. I attended Friendship regularly ( both shoots) for several years since becoming a member of the NMLRA. I drive up from Florida, camping in my Coleman tent and...

    1st time attending Friendship

Your cap lock will be just fine. As pointed out already, you have to be a member of the NMLRA AND you have to pay a registration fee, plus entry fees for whatever matches you choose to compete in. The Woodswalk is loads of fun. All reactive “ hit or miss” targets. You can also shoot “...

    Foot Pounds

Here's a 2007 article from Outdoor Life describing the equation to calculate recoil energy: https://www.outdoorlife.com/articles/guns/rifles/2007/09/calculate-recoil-energy/ There's no provision in the equation for gun fit, twist rate, etc, etc. It's just the physics of mass and motion. As...

    Shooting Rest?

I’m going to recommend staying away from any sort of rest/sled or whatever that restricts the natural recoil of the rifle against a shooter’s shoulder. Given the typical slender wrists most flintlock rifles have, you might be cracking your stock in that area if the rifle can’t move.

    First time casting

If your LEE pot has been out of service for a long time prior to this casting event, I recommend emptying it completely. Take the whole thing apart, buff out the inside with a "wire wheel" attachment on a drill. Buff off the rod that fills the spout from the inside, etc. In other words....get...

    Looking for a Flintlock Rifle

I wouldn't touch that DGW rifle at any price, and that's coming from someone with a bit of experience shooting flintlocks. For a total newbie....it's a pathway to frustration that leads to eventually dropping the whole idea then telling folks "flintlocks are unreliable", "flintlocks aren't...

Help me keep a good thing going...

Congratulations on your shooting success. As already pointed out, there's no "seasoning". Forget about that. Leave the RemOil on the shelf. NOT intended for cleaning blackpowder residue. After getting the bore clean with water...you'll need to get the water out. I use Ballistol, and/or Mobilmet...

    Shoulder Tension

Thank you HSmith. That's an excellent recommendation for a process to address target panic. I'll be incorporating your advice into my training regimen, along with the "wood flint" dry firing I do at home. I enjoy shooting my flintlocks, almost regardless of the results on targets but I have to...

    Shiny Balls

Oh, I believe they "get it" just fine, and whattya know.... in California, they're winning. You'll hear from them again sometime in the future about all that target lead you folks have put in the sacred soil of California. You can count on that.

Who makes a good range rod?

Jason, at Rice Barrels offers a great range rod.

    Shoulder Tension

I'm struggling with offhand flintlock shooting and following this thread as well. Unfortunately, there's no "live" high level coaching available so I'm reading whatever I can find on the topic, and trying to absorb what others share. A lot of good information and opinion has been posted here...

    Beginner

Perhaps some kind person will help me out. Are they talking about Rifles or Smoothbore Muskets...?? Even the Pedersoli website appears to use those terms interchangeably and I'm unsure which of their offerings are rifled, and which are smoothbore. Thanks.

1st time shooting a flintlock update, Pt. 2

Congratulations...You're on your way..!! If it matters to you, and it may not....I can assure you that if you continue to shoot from a rest and pay attention to your technique, your groups will tighten. Whenever I'm testing load combinations it's been my observation that over the course of...

Can a ball be too big?

I use a very tight load when I am shooting off a rest and require the very best precision possible out of my rifle's Green Mountain barrel and load combination. I use strips of dry patch material that have been previously soaked in 1:7 Ballistol: water (Thanks Dutch....GBNF), cut at the muzzle...

    Patches

WalMArt sells a White Flannel material in bulk in their fabric section. I buy it 3 yds ( or so...) at a time and cut my own 2x2 cleaning patches. They work great, as well or better than any commercial patches I've ever bought. Note: unlike the "shooting patches" I use that are also cut from bulk...

    1st time shooting a flintlock

Welcome to Flintlock shooting. Coupla thoughts come to mind that you might find useful. In no particular order: 1. Learn to knap your flint as needed so that you’re getting the best performance ( read: fastest ignition). 2. Front sight is critical, when you squeeze the trigger….Hold...

    First time in years

Watch out, or the "flintlock bug" will bite ya and you'll not be happy with anything else. Make sure you have a sharp flint properly mounted in the **** and hold throuuuuuuugh the shot. Enjoy..!

    Rice barrel

Last time I spoke to Jason at Rice Barrels he was offering complete “ drop in” barrels for T/C rifles.

Frustrated with flintlocks? You don't need to be!

IMHO..Eric Bye's book is a good reference for anyone making the leap into flintlock shooting. I'm with Bushfire...I don't open "Clickbait" videos. As far as flintlock shooting...I've never encountered an experienced shooter that held secrets they "didn't want you to know". There used to be a...
