    Lead ammo ban in Wisconsin?

They claim they have found several bald eagles that have had or died from lead poisoning. Who/what group debunked this? Simply telling them that Scota@4570 says there is no evidence won't get me far. Even so, even if it were true that some bald eagles were dying from lead poisoning, it...

    Lead ammo ban in Wisconsin?

Just FYI. There is a question on the Conservation Congress asking whether lead ammo should be banned for hunting in Wisconsin. You can vote tonight, or online later this week.

    36 caliber squirrel hunting

Does traditions Crocket come in .36? I thought .32 was the only offering. YOu can get Santa Fe Hawkens in .36 over at Muzzle-loaders.com. They are basically the same gun that comes in .50 and .54, so the barrel is 15/16" across-the-flats. But the listed weight is only 7.6#s. I don't know...

    .32 VS .36

You are correct. Too much powder will turn a .32 into Hell on squirrels - my son and I learned that our first time out. But if we tone down the powder charge it performs more like a .22lr.

    .32 VS .36

I have a .32 in cap lock & a .36 in flint. The .32 is named HOS which stands for Hell On Squirrels. With enough powder it will eviscerate them. Of course the .36 will do the same. The .32 is youth sized traditional longrifle which is hard to find. The guy selling it offered a deal I...

    Maximum speed with Black powder

My son and I saw repeated shots over a chronograph exceed 2300 fps. That was a .45 patched ball from a 28” Cabela’s Hawken. The charge was nothing outrageous - something like 70grns Swiss. Can’t remember if it was ffG or fffG.

    Kibler side effect?

I did not intend to imply that there was anything lacking in Kibler’s quality or faithfulness to originals. I just meant that there are limitations to CNC production - and those limitations are in the individual customizations. For example, I did not find a left-hand option on Kibler’s...

    How i make my caps

So this is not lead styphinate? I think primers for cartridge guns use lead styphinate which spews lead dust in the air (I suspect more so than the bullets themselves). What does CCI et.al. use in their percussion caps?

    Kibler side effect?

It is a tough time for a traditional muzzleloader manufacturer. The market in the U.S. is shrinking (not enough youngsters moving in, inlines taking over). And Kibler is consuming larger and larger portions. About the only way to maintain ground would be to get a cnc machine yourself. But...

How you clean pan & frizzen?

The dilemma I seem to encounter is, cleaning the pan/frizzen seems to work best with a damp patch. Brushing it with a dry brush - I don't know I suppose I'll have to give it a go. I suppose I could carry a larger rag. Normally I have a few pre-cut patches in my bag but I hate digging them...

How you clean pan & frizzen?

You aren't understanding the post. This is about hunting. If you hunt in humid climates, fouling in the pan will draw out moisture and contaminate your priming powder.

How you clean pan & frizzen?

Do you find that the softer bristle brush adequately cleans the pan? I've tried lots of different things except a brush. I don't like using a cleaning patch because they are a pain to dig out of my bag with cold fingers. Plus I can never really get to all the nooks and crannies with my fat...

How you clean pan & frizzen?

at the range I don't have to. But hunting in humid conditions the fouling residue will draw water out of the air and contaminate the priming charge. This takes time, so when you're shooting within a few seconds after priming I don't need to clean. But when it can be hours before taking the...

How you clean pan & frizzen?

For those that hunt: after taking a shot, how do you clean the pan, frizzen, & vent? I am curious if many people use those pan brushes you see sold with "flintlock tool kits", or if you use a damp rag, or some other tool.

    The Bumblebee syndrome

Have you tried examining the fired patches? .010 patch thickness with Swiss FFFg sounds like a recipe for blown patches. Swiss is a fast-burning powder, then using FFFg is faster yet. So pressures may be building rapidly. The Pennsylvania has plenty of barrel lenght to achieve good...

    Lack of younger shooters?

Another idea might be to watch the Colonial Williamsburg Gunsmith. That one is jaw dropping to see a guy go from a log and bar of iron and trun it into a beautiful rifle. However, as videos go it is slow compared to what many youth are accustomed to. It would be nice to see a modern remake of...
