    Lack of younger shooters?

I think it has something to do with how people are inspired. You said you have an interest in history. That's probably a key point. Most of the old timers that are in this sport have fond memories of watching Davy Crockett and Danial Boone on TV as well as numerous movies like Jeremiah...

    Proper range safety

Sounds like you had the same RSO as I got! I haven't been back to that range since. Again, I get it if the RSO is making a judgement call, but when they rudely cut you off as you try to explain that following the same protocols for CF guns might not be the safest thing for a ML . . .

    WANTED WTB Flinter Have question

Unless you have suspicions that gun values will go down in the near future - I think $700 for NIB is probably good and fair (you're not gettin' swindled and don't have to feel guilty stealing it from a widow who doesn't know better). Lots of us old guys remember when things were cheaper. But...

SOLD 36 Cal Flintlock Squirrel Rifle

At the price he's asking - if it shoots reliably and accurately it's a great deal. I wouldn't get picky about appearances unless I was in the four-digit market. Besides, tacks are probably the easiest thing to "undo".

Help me decide.... fast twist Pedersoli, White Muzzleloader Sporter or.....

Yeah. You can talk about conicals and minis all day long - just don't mention the polyethylene shoes and you'll be alright.

SOLD NEAR MINT Unfired Pedersoli .50 KENTUCKY Rifle

Is that in fact a Pennsylvania? How long is the barrel? Pedersoli offers a series of guns that are just about identical except barrel length. The Scout has the shortest barrel, the Kentucky is mid-length, and the Pennsylvania has the longest barrel. Of course there is nothing for frame of...

    deflected wound channel?

This season I got a doe with my .54. I used a soft lead roundball and had a beautiful broadside shot. The ball entered just behind the arm. For some reason it took minutes to expire. Upon opening the gut cavity I was surpised to find blood below the diaphram. The ball went through one lung...

    southern mt. vs hawken rifles

I know Hawken rifles have bolts (not screws) that go through the wrist and thread into the trigger plate/guard assembly which strengthens the wrist area. How about southern rifles? I see that long tangs that extend way down the wrist are common but I don't see mention of bolts going through to...

    Fast Twist Flint Lock?

Huh. I wonder what the people who have bought the Pedersoli fast twist flinters have experienced. I can't say I see a lot of them coming on these forums with accuracy woes.

    Mag-Spark

That's good to know that it will ignite Blackhorn. I was considering getting some of those, but didn't want to lay out the cash if it didn't work for BH. I have a sidelock that I loan out and it might be nice to introduce a newby to muzzleloading if they don't feel they have to clean immediately.

    exasperated!!!

.510 bullet sizing dies are pretty common. If you could get your hands on one of those, then take a 1/2-in. dowel & saw a short cut down the end of it. Now you can place the end of a strip of sand paper in that slot and wrap it around the dowel gritty side out. Insert this into the die and...

    Bedded the tang: fit problems

By radius, do you mean the little rounded corner underneath where the tang meets the breech? When you bed a barrel - do you usually hog out some wood to make room for the bedding material? Or is the point to only bed those spots where the barrel doesn't already contact wood?

    Bedded the tang: fit problems

Gadzooks that would be awful from a rifle! Especially from a bench. I generally have a sense of how well I can see the target and the amount of "shake" my sight picture has. And I know I'm holding better than 6" at 50 yards. 3 inches. There we go. I can do that. Would there be any mistake...

    Bedded the tang: fit problems

How do I know? Would I have to use candle black on the barrel, pin it in place, then check the channel? How many gaps, and how big could those gaps be (I doubt you'd achieve a perfect, consistent, contact surface the entire length)? I've read lots about how to develop loads to achieve...

    Bedded the tang: fit problems

How far up the barrel channel do you need to bed? If I bed a few centimeters is that adequate? Or does the barrel need to be supported the entire length? If it's the latter, it might seem easier to just bed the entire channel.

    Bedded the tang: fit problems

Not sure what you mean. Under the breach? Or behind it? I'm not sure how far up the barrel I could bed. There is no web between the barrel chanel & ramrod channel. I'd have to fill the ramrod channel, but cleaning it out afterwards might be a trick. Behind the breech seems to be fairly tight.

    TVM Southern vs. Tennessee

Exactly. If you read my posts - you'll notice I've been trying my darndest to steer the conversation towards the actual features. But the responses keep drifting towards the authenticity of the styles TVM imagines they represent. I don't care about that, I am more interested in the features and...

    TVM Southern vs. Tennessee

Ok. The drop at the heel seems noticeable . . .once someone points it out. The photographs are not of the two guns next to each other, plus the picture are taken from diffrrent perspectives which doesn't bring out the differemces in stock architecture. How wide are the buttplates?
