    Need your advice please

fffg does seem to work best for me up to .58". ffg for my .62", and I've gone to fg for my .75". I believe a wax wad, under a felt wad, will keep a patch that is liquid lubed from contaminating the powder. Muzzle loading is a true one-shot deal when hunting, and nothing goes far after getting...

Persona with a Wilson Trade Gun

Having spent many years in a canoe, which involved much hunting with and from the canoe, (have now graduated to sea-kayaks) I can say that a long gun works fine, in said canoe. Hunted many a duck with a 30" barreled double barrel, from a canoe. From that experience, I don't see how a "canoe gun"...

"The Gunsmith of Grenville County" by Peter Alaxander is a good read, and good theory as to how the Long Rifle developed.

Nessler Balle cartridges, getting ready to try them out

I'm still a bit skeptical about the Nessie ever actually working, but this is very cool that you are experimenting with it. I don't think lube in the ring is a problem. I would sure like to see you dip the base, up to just above the ring, in hot melted bee's wax. A thin coating will not fill...

    American Jaeger

I think a combination of #1 and #2, or, a "combination of the two". Certainly in that era the long barreled rifle was the norm. Certainly "style" did play a part. Young men wanted to emulate the Native Americans, and a long barrel, small caliber does have it's advantages for those far out on the...

Nessler Balle cartridges, getting ready to try them out

I think upping the charge would be the way to go. ?

    American Jaeger

In 1790, I don't think anyone would regulate a good working Jeager to the corner, because it wasn't "in style". T'was the American Indian who drove the demand for long barreled rifles, and in turn the young white American men, who respected the woodcraft of the Indian, who followed suit. I'm...

    .54 cal barrel length.

Okay...thought you were talking about a rifle? But...100 grains in a pistol? o: I have a .50" Plains Pistol that I shoot up to 70-75 grains with a ball, and 60 grains with a 240 grain bullet, but that's the limit for me, as far as still being able to hold on to the pistol. However, it's quite...

    big mama came back home,,,,,,,,,,

Mine has the Colerain barrel, and the rifle weighs in at 8.25#, so she carries nice all day too. Jeagers are pretty darn cool when done right. :)

    American Jaeger

Sounds kind of like mine. Mine is Jeager in form, but has a nose cap and toe plate, an early English type lock, and no patch box. Bird Dog Six built it for me as a no-frills, non-fancy "working gun". Except for the lock, most of my furniture is typical German.

    big mama came back home,,,,,,,,,,

For sure, I bet it handles nice. My Jeager, which is very much like Ols, (not all Jeagers are alike) is the best handling rifle I've ever shot. Put it at port arms, close my eyes, throw it my shoulder, open my eyes and the sights are perfectly lined up. The length, profile of the barrel...

Can a mainspring be made stronger?

Lead pot? Does the wife have a cast iron fry pan she won't miss? They make great lead pots. :) Seriously.

    Need your advice please

Hunting rifle or paper puncher? Two-three shots for hunting is all ya need. Paper-Punching...need more shots! First off, throw the 777 away, or give it to some fool. :) Yes, try different lubes. Some Swiss powder might make the difference. I've found recently, that a wool felt wad, dropped in...

Can a mainspring be made stronger?

That actually sounds like an excellent idea, would not stress the larger spring, and might actually result in superior "spring action". I believe that leaf springs on a car/truck have some advantages over coil springs, (or a single spring) kind of the same principal. (of course, most cars/trucks...

    .54 cal barrel length.

Might have to get a 40" barrel, and cut it down an inch at a time, while shooting it over a chronograph, to see where velocity really starts dropping off. I suppose one could cut the barrel down to eight inches, and still kill a deer at 75 yards. I suppose the minimum really depends on how...

    Crockett ?

I think it would make a very nice .40 caliber. I don't see how it would be "too big" for small game. I have an original rifle in .40" that has shot everything from small game, to people, to deer very well. My Remington Navy revolver, which shoots a .375" ball, very close to what a .40" rifle...

round ball fit for smooth bores

Should be able to do at least 6" at 50 yards with a patched ball. In my experience with my Bess, a heavy charge seems to be more accurate than a light one, and wads under the ball seems to increase accuracy for me. I have also found that a wonder wad, dropped in hot, pure bee's wax, and then...

Can a mainspring be made stronger?

I would try the wedge-thing, as mentioned by Z, first. This worked very well on my Brown Bess main spring, which seemed weak. On that lock, the spring is nice and long, which I believe lessens the chance of it breaking. You don't have to increase tension very much, to get better results. What...
