    Acronyms

I think it’s from Rider Haggard’s novels, which tangentially takes us back to muzzle loading as the hero, Allan Quatermain totes a fairly tasty 4 bore stopping gun (that’s a quarter pound of RB if anyone is still following the original thrust of this thread)…. Rumpole I think was himself paying...

    Acronyms

Yeah, they are a form of lazy, but also a pretty decently established way to communicate: NATO, USA, LLC, SAE, USMC, I feel like I could use any of these without causing undue confusion, and amongst a community dedicated to traditional muzzleloader shooting I don’t think a PRB or BP would really...

Does your state have a Flintlock ONLY season?

Yeah - it's all pretty inconsistent....

Does your state have a Flintlock ONLY season?

I don't object to sharing the season as such - but it ought to be limited to traditional archery.

    Pattern 1776 or Baker kit

Just to bring this back up to the top - does anybody have any suggestions for rifle builders I could/should contact?

Does your state have a Flintlock ONLY season?

Hope you succeed. Another state with a dedicated flintlock season would be a good thing!

Does your state have a Flintlock ONLY season?

The really dumb thing is that it’s flintlock and archery, and archery is totally unrestricted, so you can use a flintlock with open sights, or any type of bow including a crossbow with a scope. Would be better if the archers were also restricted to traditional weapons. Other than that it’s my...

    Pattern 1776 or Baker kit

Once again Dave I can only agree with you. No amount of Ferguson rifles would have changed the outcome of the war, indeed I don’t think it would have much mattered if Ferguson had taken his reputed opportunity to shoot Washington. Battlefield success is less important in wars of national self...

    Pattern 1776 or Baker kit

Thanks @dave_person I admit I had been wondering why the Ferguson didn’t use a two piece stock given the notoriety of it as a weak point. I assume when you shoot yours you do so with an unpatched ball that is just a naturally tight fit to the rifling?

    Pattern 1776 or Baker kit

Clearly, I am not Dave and dare not appear to approach his practical knowledge - I can comment on this from a military history standpoint and maybe add some context. The Baker gained enough additional accuracy from the slow twist rifling to make British (and British equipped allies)...

    Pattern 1776 or Baker kit

Once again, thanks @dave_person I don’t think I could even pay for that knowledge.

    Pattern 1776 or Baker kit

@dave_person a Ferguson would certainly have been on my list but as a breach loader I don’t think I would be able to use it in the M/L seasons, although I know it was supplied with a ramrod and designed to be able to be loaded from the muzzle in the event that the breach mechanism became...

many thanks @dave_person I shall study your response carefully when I am home and try not to drool over my keyboard at your pictures!
  14. LeftHandGuy

    Pattern 1776 or Baker kit

yeah - for sure I wouldn’t have any real use for the Baker’s bayonet lug whilst whitetail hunting!
  15. LeftHandGuy

    Pattern 1776 or Baker kit

Yeah - I think I am leaning that way too. I know from shooting straight stocked flintlocks and dog locks that the lock being in the right doesn’t bother me, but having a cheek piece in the “wrong” side would (at custom gun prices!) Also the1776 has that Revolutionary War connection that...

    Pattern 1776 or Baker kit

Hi all, hoping to start a discussion - perhaps even a couple of well mannered arguments - to help me make a decision and start planning for what will be (for me at least) the significant purchase of a custom built rifle. Basically I want a high quality flintlock rifle whose primary use will be...

    K L Moors Flintlocks

@Marc Adamchek please show us some pictures of the rifle! And @KL Moors whereabouts in the country are ?

    Swiss, German, Goex?

To be fair I think you’re getting more screwed by the journey than the price difference! Last time I bought GOEX (about this time last year) I paid $30/lb. I have seen Swiss for $35/lb. $A125 is about $90 at the moment, and a kilo is 2.2 lbs. Meaning that your Swiss comes out at a little less...

    Filled my buck tag today

Awesome rifle. And I agree with you about the the fact that time in the field is what breeds success. If I had a flintlock like yours I might not bother with an unmentionable at all!

    SOLD Traditions .50 Deerhunter

I actually really like my Traditions Deerhunter, and it looks like yours is one of the slightly older ones with dovetails in the barrel for the sights. IMHO that makes it even more valuable because changing/upgrading the sights is cheaper and easier and will look more “traditional”. Good luck...
