Conical bullets in a cap and ball revolver

So by this quorum so far, it looks like I should just stay with round ball. Any accuracy difference from .451 to .454?

Conical bullets in a cap and ball revolver

I looked for the Lee bullet mold but nobody has them in stock.

Conical bullets in a cap and ball revolver

Can conical rounds be used in a Navy or a Colt Walker? If so, are they more accurate? Thanks for any info, M

CVA Pennsylvania cap and ball .50

Nobody has in stock the Hornady PA Conicals. Nobody I've found yet. But what about these? https://rmcoxyoke.com/product/t-c-maxi-hunter-pre-lubed-bullets-2/ They are the Thompson Center Maxi Hunter Pre Lubed bullets. They kind of look like the Hornady's.

CVA Pennsylvania cap and ball .50

So these Hornady's, when I load them, are they blunt nosed enough to use my patch/ball starter into the muzzle without ruining the conical? One issue I had before all this rust issue came up was at the range, back when shooting with my uncle, I was only firing round ball. After about 3 rounds...

CVA Pennsylvania cap and ball .50

Did they discontinue them? I did not know a rifle like mine could fire conical rounds. Are there any comparable products like the Lee REAL bullet mold? M

CVA Pennsylvania cap and ball .50

Well I put some more foaming bore cleaner in there and let it sit for a bit. I got brown patches again. So I repeated the process. I made a mistake on the steel wool, its actually 0000, not 00. Once again, no brown on the patches after repeating the process. So I'll keep repeating this until...

CVA Pennsylvania cap and ball .50

OK so I bought some Birchwood Casey rust removal solution. I also got the finest steel wool I could find. 00 was the finest that I could find. I followed the directions to the letter. I degreased first using patches. Then applied the rust remover with a mop. I set a timer and waited the 2...

CVA Pennsylvania cap and ball .50

I'll look for evapo-rust. I have a loop, that I pushed some 00 steel wool through. I was considering using that too. I have worried about the brushes. On a modern rifle, you can just push them through but on this, wow, trying to get that brush to reverse directions, it would take a lot of force...

CVA Pennsylvania cap and ball .50

OK so, I brushed the heck out of it, with barrel blaster citrus based cleaner. The patches I run down the barrel come back brown. That means rust right? Would a penetrating oil help break up the rust? Something like aerocroil? What is a good cleaner to use on what I presume to be rust in...

    Colt Walker, Colt Navy .44's

These ones were cleaned before being put away. They just need oiled real bad. The rifle is what I used when going shooting with my uncle. I was just thinking for future. I used an ultra sonic cleaner for my stainless modern pistol and its suppressor and those parts came out looking brand new...

CVA Pennsylvania cap and ball .50

I never fired pyrodex out of it. I fired GOEX FFFg black powder rifle out of it. OK yeah I have a range rod somewhere, I'm still unpacking crap. Home now and its 3 degrees out so I'll need to do this cleaning inside, LOL. Thanks for the advice! M

    Colt Walker, Colt Navy .44's

I have these two cap and ball revolvers. Just wondering what the thoughts are on cleaning the cylinders in a parts bath or an ultra sonic cleaner. Any suggestions or warnings? Thanks for any information, M

CVA Pennsylvania cap and ball .50

I have a Connecticut Valley Arms Pennsylvania .50. Its a very long barrel. Cap and ball. I need to get the corrosion off of it. I put it away without cleaning when my uncle died. I used to go shooting with him every week with it. Then he got real sick and died. The rifle got put away dirty...

Getting back to shooting black powder now that I am retired

Getting back to shooting black powder now that I am retired

I do have somewhere, I have not found it yet an apparatus that connects a tube to where the nipple threads in, and the other end of the tube goes into a bucket of soapy water. Then plunging a patch from the muzzle it ends up drawing the soapy water up into the barrel and that's how I used to...

Getting back to shooting black powder now that I am retired

I've got some corrosion on this rifle, I was thinking brass brush and the alcohol like was mentioned? Also could I be reminded how to clean the flash channel with the nipple off? If I remember right, is it pipe cleaner?

Getting back to shooting black powder now that I am retired

One guy at a shop told me to never clean my rifle with any petroleum based oils or cleaners. I have citrus based cleaner I'm using.

Getting back to shooting black powder now that I am retired

Thanks, just getting re-oriented with it all. I need to field strip and clean all my guns before firing them. With modern firearms ammo so short, I may have to use these muzzle loaders for a more practical means. I have a serious coyote problem. I have chickens and these coyotes this year are...
