Open Top Colts - Hammer Touch

Very interesting, Your caps when fired do they show any problems. Mine seem to be hit fairly hard and split a lot. using treso nipples.

Good Morning, The only way I used to feel the contact was to have the barrel assembly off. The end shake is set between .002-.003 and that is hard to feel hammer contact when assembled. With the barrel assembly off, and apply slight pressure on the cylinder to keep the cylinder rearward it seems...

45D - My only cap and ball colt revolver has the interference fit of about .015. So that is good for firing. Just had some wild thoughts about making a new design hammer and it is still in the thought stage right now. Just wanted to make sure the nipple with cap is supposed to take the full hit...

Better reaction time, but your answer is like kindergarten type. If you have no experience on the subject why are you responding.

Would like to know if there are any thoughts on the Colts hammer contact with the nipple on firing. Clearance? Contact and then some? Realize factory kind of has it set, but has anybody changed the setting and why? Thanks for any information. Maybe a different way of asking - Should the hammer...

    Not toys

Who said they were toys? Or is that a new statement that is being made for benefit of safety. I have never known any forum member to refer to a muzzle loader as a toy. Well until you stated the word toy. I should have added that a Kibler with a very large and clear stamped barrel "This Is Not A...

Making a wedge for the 1860

This posting is about done and I would like to say that I was impressed with one idea M. De land has submitted. While not an original Colt design it is very cleaver in that it eliminates the need for the spring. By leaving the left side open and closing the right side. Such a simple approach...

Making a wedge for the 1860

This reminds me of my Dad. He could make me anything with so little amount of tools. I really miss watching my Dad. I completely agree, felt funny even making this post about making a wedge. It's just the simplest of parts with no moving parts. And felt like I was making a big deal about it...

Powder for Longer or Shorter Barrels.

Me thinks you want that: 2. When you want flame and smoke, you want unburned powder flying out the muzzle and igniting. And use a slower-burning powder?😀

I think you are correct and feel that way to.

Making a wedge for the 1860

Pete 453 - I made one like a Pocket police wedge with a clearance groove for the screw, and tempered to a straw color. I don't remember what O1 Rockwells at that temp. Rich, M., do you guys think that's too hard? Seems Ok, but I haven't shot it much. I have a couple to make, I can always temper...

Making a wedge for the 1860

Folks - I have submitted this post on making the wedge to show how it can be done and look very similar to the original with correct fit. Am sorry the discussion of making a wedge is such a wedge between people. It is very much recognized that opinions are very much like noses, everybody has...

M.De Land - Thanks for your reply. It is always interesting to understand how other mechanic's skin the cat also. A lot of my knowledge did come from observing and learning from others. You certainly have a right to make known and disagree with my steps. But for the time being I feel very...
