    1860 Colt Hammer Redo

Looking at the hammer face on an original the colt 1860, it seems it is hitting the cone lower than on my replica colt. 1st picture (from internet) shows original 1860 with a lot of use. It can be seen that the round bearing surface for the cylinder to ride on has a flat on top side which allows...

Advice on metal and tools for percussion shotgun build.

By all means give it your best attempt. It may take some time and mistakes will happen. When making a mistake that when you learn, so try and make a few. And don't give up. Like Phil stated o-1 tool steel is my favorite for so many parts. But I have not used it for springs. There are so many...

    Today's purchase

The op was simply showing the great buy he got and now his post is being taken over. Great information, so now that we have the 2 great revolver mechanic's together. Give me your opinion. In reference to cylinder to barrel gap, while I might not be an expert with using feeler gauges. The .003...

How fast can BP revolvers be reloaded?

It's not how fast you can load it, it's how fast you can unload it accurately.

Throw it out there? That is some really nice work. By the size of the shot, that will make a nice bang. Everything looks great.

Looking for picture of Original 1860 Hammer

Looking for a picture of a 1860 Colt, showing hammer and frame like below pictures. If you have Original 1860 Colt would you please remove cylinder and post picture? The first picture is a replica and the other 2 may be an original 1860, but not positive, and would like to verify. Very hard to...

To all who gave me idea's

I hope you can take that very useful tool and hang it on the wall and not use it anymore.:)

think about the time and effort it took..

You are correct, and therefore U.S. has actually less toolmakers now than before.

think about the time and effort it took..

An apprentice that did not use all his spare time and extra hours making different tooling, simply did not show his desire to learn his trade. And each trade might call for different tooling to favor. As a toolmaker you just can't have too many tools to support your trade, and not just store bought.

    Breech plug issue

If it would leave enough barrel by cutting and boring correctly I would keep it. If not I would tell myself it was wonderful for me to help out this older gentleman and move on with a smile. To use as is or with a larger plug creating thinner wall would always be on my mind.

Like you said it is fun getting a new gun. You will have the fun of making the grips, home made always feels better. And shooting a 36 will be lots of fun. Hope it turns out to be your favorite gun. Good Luck

    Antique Fair Pistol

Looks like somebody took the de-farb too far. :) I guess I would put a towel on my lap and use a very soft brass brush and some old shop cloths to clean it up a little while I watched gunsmoke on tv. Might take awhile.
