Got the permalyn lid off, First coat of finish on!

I think that is a shipping lid. Drive a flat screwdriver blade through lid then pry lid up and discard. The other lid is for typical use.

Iron Nitrate assistance - Woodsrunner Kit

That looks about right. I would suggest not repeating that step unless you want a really dark brown. Yours will turn out right. Good luck.

    time machine

While we live in a world full of controversies and lots of things piss us off, it is a very rare instance when we must dodge a spear, sword or bayonet. Muzzle loaders are my hobby. Something to do on Sunday afternoon. Then it was survival, and meat on the table.

The Tenuous Future of Living History

I took the opportunity to attend my first reenactment today, the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. I was impressed by the authenticity at so many levels and the dedication it takes to purchase and maintain all the uniforms, weapons and accoutrements. All in all, a well spent afternoon in Greensboro...

The Tenuous Future of Living History

Thanks for posting those links, MadMichael. I find it a little out of character for the Park Service to hire such a small, single person firm.

What gun for early 1700's Virginia.

Holy smokes, this guy is a proverbial encyclopedia. Thanks Dave for the lesson. I think I may have learned more from this thread than I did in high school history. Then again my attention span is longer now.

    Is TRS still around?

Even Mom and Pop business needs a means of communicating if they intend to keep customers. I would not do business with a company a cannot contact and will not answer an inquiry.

What gun for early 1700's Virginia.

Dave Person, that was so well written and informative concerning weapons that predate most of what "we" commonly think of and encounter. Thank you.

The Tenuous Future of Living History

The line in the story about consultants making recommendations and writing a report, then walking away with little follow on responsibility, was very important. And so true. The story did not say where the consultant was from, or what their experience or credentials were, but one can easily...

The Tenuous Future of Living History

Yep, Wis, I'm betting this thread is the proverbial, 'preaching to the choir". But we may gain some interesting insights and side stories. Thanks for posting.

The Tenuous Future of Living History

I found an interesting and troubling article in the Colorado Sun about living history at Fort Bent Colorado near La Junta. The article tells the story for Fort Bent, named for two brothers, and the condition and future of the living history program there. I t seems the Nat Park Service hired a...

    Building a Powder Horn

Thanks Jaeger and LME. I appreciate the gracious comments. I think my horn turned out OK and will try to do better with the next one, learning along the way. My first rifle, my first Rococco carving, all look different than my latest. Just trying to have a little fun along the way.

BTW Gerry (Lucky), I am trying to make plans to be at the Guilford Courthouse event this weekend and hoping to swing by your hooch for a visit. I am about 1 1/2 hrs drive east of Greensboro.

    Building a Powder Horn

Hey HAM, concerning the horn and hair dye, you are correct that both hair and nail (horn in this case) are made of keratin. Therefore one would expect good results with hair dye. My only concern is cost. Unless you have the right color laying around why try to beat Rit at 2-3 dollars per box? I...
