JP Beck’s daddy kicked Isaac Haines’s daddy’s butt. It was so bad Isaac changed his name to Haynes.

Deepest darkest blue I've ever seen

Concerning our periods of study, the 18th and 19th Centuries.... To simplify the “ heat” bluing processes for barrels it come down to two basic processes. 1. Charcoal Blue.... The item like a barrel is buried in charcoal. Usually it’s in an iron trough with a log fire under the trough. The...

Deepest darkest blue I've ever seen

That’s called “fire” or temper blue. The part is heated until the desired color appears and then it’s quenched, locking the color. Fire blue produces spectacular colors but the finish is somewhat delicate. Smaller parts like screws, triggers and plates are easy to do but larger parts like...

    Bazinga!!!!!! Cracked.... What to do?

This is my first attempt at CA repair. So far so good. This is not a through and through crack. It’s just on the cheek side. You can see the worm track. The cheek side is still a lot in the square. A lot of that crack will wind up on the shop floor. So far the CA liquid Loctite has filled it...

    Bazinga!!!!!! Cracked.... What to do?

Hey, I want to thank everyone. All input is appreciated. I’m going to continue on. It’s going to be a family gun. It’s a unique “Early Virginia/SW Virginia/ Overthrmountain Rifle and I want to see it complete.

    Carolina Style smoothbore

Clay Smith makes a nice gun. His Basic Carolina is a great gun but it’s a little too fat. This is mainly due to the more common 42” Barrel profile. His “ Bumford” is much more “PC” trade gun. Mike Brooks has been mentioned and his Carolinas are great. Jack Brooks also made Carolinas Carolinas...

    Bazinga!!!!!! Cracked.... What to do?

I knew I had a crack at the toe to the cheek side. I did not know I had another that runs nearly to the wrist. Yikes!!!!! I don’t know if this can be fixed and how? 46” swamped barrel hand inlet Ketland lock inlet It was coming along well I was planning to carve beaver tails, moulding, chip...

    Too fat

Now the lock is not down. I actually lost the first Ketland. That hurt. I need to file the plate and tweak the new lock to drop in. Ok You can see one of my mistakes. I had a pretty big chip out of the lock mortise when in letting the lock. That chunk below the bolster and above the spring...

    Too fat

Hey everyone, I appreciate the feedback. Next up right now is bringing the lower forestock down close “in the square’. I have my lock panel defined and I need to prepare the side plate side also. On this step toe rifle I feel that the tang to comb nose and the trigger to rear finial of the...

    Hand built vs production

All of this is really above my pay grade. My advice is to be very careful in whose advice you take and be very very careful on who you let work on it. RCA 145 went for 92K There’s a Bonewitz with estimates of north of 50K These are published or by a well known maker. I know it’s not about the...

    Apply wax in barrel channel?

One thing that has not been mentioned directly, accidentally gluing the gun together with finish. This is not good. My gun was “waterproof”. Not! Now my waterproof gun is in three pieces since I tried to take it apart and..... Make mo wata proof.

    Too fat

Thanks.... Right now the rifle is still partially in the square. This was a preliminary shape to get the lock panel defined so I can transfer it to the side plate side. OK The top a free hand drawing..... I was fooling around and wanted to “see it” in two dimensions. I got the stock line all...

    Too fat

It depends on how big that limb is. Are you trying for half stock or full stock. You might find that you can only get pistols out of it. You could try cutting it In slabs to see that you have. It really needs to dry for a couple of years.

    Too fat

You may not have got the joke.... George Washington chopping down the Cherry tree “He cannot tell a lie.” Da-dump-dump—-ting When joke has to be explained, it’s not very good. Carry on and thanks for the compliment.

    Too fat

Are you kin to George Washington? Be honest.🤪 Talent????? I just fumble through these. Tools...... All you really need is a 1/4 inch chisel, a good rasp, an 8/7 gouge, a depth gauge, a straight edge, pencils, markers, a vise, a candle, a drill with bits and a buddy with a bandsaw. ^^^^ No joke...

    Too fat

Hmmmmm Too fat!!!!!! When an Early Ketland looks like a Small Siler, you know your stock is too fat. Better now..... Sometimes they get fat, I guess that’s from oversized layout. It all adds up. So when they get fat. Make them ....not fat.

Laurel Mountain Forge Browning solution for blueing

Copious amounts of water is one of the first actions to quickly neutralize acids or bases in an emergency situation. Think eyewash station..... Since it’s being boiled that may be enough. I do not remember neutralizing the parts I rust blued with the Belgian Blue. As a matter of fact I did...

Laurel Mountain Forge Browning solution for blueing

You are boiling correct? The cold browning solutions will rust blue but it has to be converted. Apply, boil card apply boil card..... Maybe you could change that up as you get close.... Apply, boil, card, boil..... Sometimes colors my vary from blue to black to a very dark brown. I think a lot...
