Just a simple old rifle.....Plenty of inspiration

I believe it does have that concavity you mention. I’m going to get some good photos of the cheek side.

    Hand built vs production

More thoughts about your antique.... It’s a Golden Age rifle like Mike says. It’s signed by a known maker I have studied the photos quite a bit and it has some really interesting features. Chip carving.... That is not that common on a long rifle That’s a neat feature It has a mix of inscised...

Just a simple old rifle.....Plenty of inspiration

I read the old article about “Boon’s Best Fren” many years ago. According to that period article that rifle was found in Alabama which is very interesting. There is no doubt that the Best Fren rifle is a fake Boone gun. What may be true is the Alabama connection. It’s all food for thought...

Just a simple old rifle.....Plenty of inspiration

Wonder what it did from 1861-1865. Maybe nothing. Maybe putting food on the table..... Yep All we can do is wonder. I have a revolver with stains on the bluing. Sometimes we may not want to know.

Would you share a photo of flush flintlock (lock) panel?

This is a later lock. It’s not the Late Ketland but I did style it like the Late 18th Early 19th Century Import locks. This is a later rifle and you can see where the wood is relieved above the lock plate. It’s a later rifle with a later lock. It’s a different method for cock clearance. Note...

Would you share a photo of flush flintlock (lock) panel?

The lock mortise for an early Ketland. The bevel on the lock plate has nothing to do with stock/lock panel clearance. You can see here that the lock panel is being brought down and all there is is just a notch where the cock rests on the top of the plate. You can just see a little dimple in...

OK.... Here you can see the Roosa’s entry pipe and the iron gun’s entry location. Possibly similar. One caveat though, The Roosa was “restored”. There is a possibility that the entry is a more recent replacement. Personally I think it’s correct but...it’s something to keep in mind. Also...

Just a simple old rifle.....Plenty of inspiration

I have a brass mounted “Jacob Rosa” squirrel rifle. It’s contemporary with this iron mounted rifle. Kentucky made about 1840. There some similarities in the furniture. The Roosa.... As you can see the guards are similar, especially when viewed from the side It’s like the hand forged iron...

Oh, I see. That’s a smoothbore project for the shop. It’s getting ready for the ramrod groove. I’m going to start cutting it out Monday. It’s unrelated to the rifle. It was just a good spot to get some quick photos. Have a great Thanksgiving

Just a simple old rifle.....Plenty of inspiration

Possibly Mr. Reddodge I’m sure Ed Rayl or Bobby Hoyt could refresh or rebore it and the barrel would probably be very usable. It would be tragic to do that to it in my opinion. Separated from the stock.... Both the barrel and the stock remnant become pretty much worthless relics. There’s...

    Hand built vs production

I agree That’s an advanced entry level Kentucky. In the black closer to “ as found” I would suspect the value would be much, much higher. It’s had some work done....🙄 How much it’s hard to tell I guess it’s typical of “restoration” work from 20-50 years ago.... I can see how it could be...

Would you share a photo of flush flintlock (lock) panel?

I will add to Eric’s excellent comment... Using proper architecture most of the cock clearance notch will be gone With the flat tang at the top the top edge of the stock should angle flat down to match the top of the barrel side flat In other words the side flat line should continue in the...

Just a simple old rifle.....Plenty of inspiration

A hand forged barrel Yes it is swamped very slight but it does flare at the muzzle and breech Notice the oh so tiny front sight blade I believe it’s tarnished silver It may be dovetailed but I could see no evidence of a dovetail It could be “set” into the barrel The caliber is rather large...

Just a simple old rifle.....Plenty of inspiration

I became enamored with this simple old rifle. I had to share. It’s a late Southern rifle if I was going to guess 1840 ish “unknown maker”. Some may call it a poor boy but I disagree. It’s nicer than that. It’s got great architecture It’s got a great cheek piece with three incised lines (dummy...

    Rust prevention

I get what you are saying but I disagree. Petroleum did not change much at all. The argument could be made that most BP guns are rust buckets today. It has little to do with oils and mostly to do with care. Besides petroleum products existed in 1800. Camphor, mineral oil, asphaltom....on and on...

    No new builds

I don’t like this on so many levels. It’s really a depressing read. You did make a promise. Restocking a perfectly good rifle means destroying a perfectly good rifle. A “restock” is a new build. You did make a promise. I don’t like the fact you had to make that promise but it was made. You have...

    not holding half cock

Another thing to try..... With the lock installed remove the trigger assembly and guard. Put the lock in half cock See if will hold half cock when you apply reasonable pressure on the sear with a punch This will tell if the trigger assembly is preventing the sear from fully seating in the notch.

    "Above Grade" wood

Nice wood!! This is not really a compliment regarding a nice well executed, well decorated longrifle.
