    Ruger Old Army

I would have been one of the doubters sans my lust for that big bad 47 Walker and 45D explaining the system such that I was willing to give it a try. I have not been disappointed. Actually I have been impressed and that don't come easy from this old dog.

    Ruger Old Army

I would say that was a Red Flag for 45D. Well I find it absurd as well. So let us count the ways (or my added take) Granted Ruger should have used their Open Top Colt design for the offering, not that silly closed top strap type. So that is a serious knock right there. Then...

What do you guys lube your C&B revolvers with?

Out of context. As Lee never shot his gun of course he would seal the chambers! (note seal not chain fire). It is funny to see all the Goop solutions and why one goop is the best.

    #11 caps

Not sure what Cones work. I got the Slix Springs cones and those were no better than the existing on 3 other guns. What did improve the problem was getting RWS 1075 Caps. Regardless of size designation, those fit.

Recommended revolver parts to upgrade or have as spares?

I have 4 BP revolvers so if one is on its lips I have 3 others to shoot while I sort it out. As noted, my ASP favored (Uberti I think) for the bolt appearance. I got one and it did not index on the CAM right. The bolt I had ground down the latch end worked fine, I did not trust it so...

What do you guys lube your C&B revolvers with?

Use .454 sized balls and you should have a good seal and no issue. That is how those guns were intended for use, the ball is squeezed and a band shows up (if you drive a ball out from the rear by removing the Cone you will see that). Check top see if the chambers are round and not oval...

    Maximum loads for 1858 Remington

My 41 magnum likes hot loads. The BPs I have prefer something 650 to 850 FPS. Add in ball size or even conicals. Each gun is different. Most prefer a given load but some are very agnostic (I have a 6.5 CM Custom barrel that shoots almost any load and bullet under and inch, that is a...

Recommended revolver parts to upgrade or have as spares?

I am no expert, but what I can say is what fit in 1978 may well not fit now. I tried to replace a bolt with an identical looking one (the gun was a 76 ASP) and it did not work. I had modified a bolt from another mfg, but it was the catch end not the end with the arms. It sounds like...

Pietta 1858 New Army revolver and conical sizing

That is a good idea on the ones you pour or even for a store bought type. As I understand it home poured tend to be a bit larger? As noted the store bought JD were .460 (that is the official and actual measurement) and very difficult for the NMW and 47 Walker. They fit the ROA fine...

Pietta 1858 New Army revolver and conical sizing

They’re an original design for Colt and Remington revolvers and they work just dandy. The JD Concials I got are .460. They do not fit into my 47 Walker at all happily. Its a fight to get them moving to get seated. They do fit the ROA fine with its larger chambers.

Pietta 1858 New Army revolver and conical sizing

The ring of lead itself is not the goal. What you are after is a band on the bullet, be it ball or Conical that seals from the powder flash leading to a chain fire. The lead shaving can be an indicator your are achieving that. If the cylinder is oval below that, then you still can have a...

    Conicals for revolvers

Its worth a try on the Kaido. My experience says there are no givens, you have to try various combination of ball (mostly) or the Concials and see what works with what charge and type of powder.

    Ruger Old Army

I don't see the problem, loading .457 in mine is no issue. .454 a tad easier. Keeping in mind what people ask for these and what they get are two different things. I lot advertised high and they just expire and then repeat over and over as they never sell. Both of mine were picked up...

    Conicals for revolvers

Back to if you have the right sized projectile you don't need goo over the chamber. Statistically you may get away with the goop covering up the bullet size issue but one the protection for a created condition fails, well, you pull the short straw. I have no desire to do chain fires...

    Conicals for revolvers

That would be a case of pushing to an extreme and then saying lube works. Well, sort of. Any failure in the lube and its coverage and its a chain fire for sure. The correct approach is not to have to add stuff to try to prevent a guaranteed result, ie, use the right sized ball. I...

    Conicals for revolvers

There was zero research done back in the day. You will note that the same Army used a Jacket bullet in the 1911 because it would feed correctly. No expansions and it poked holes (which is true of all Ball to this day because the Army wants to shoot through things). Ergo, on no proof...

Opinions on Pietta 1851 Confederate Navy revolver?

1858 Rem vs a Brass Frame or vs Open Top ? I figure everyone has their druthers, I like my 47 Walker and the open top has been an eye opener., I would not tell someone its better or more enjoyable. It is for me but there are far more not me's out there than there is me. As long as...

    For sixty years.....

Other than it does not have to be Dawn, that is the method I have settled on. Any grease fighting detergent will work. I am shooting true black a fair amount so serious crud. I have a stainless pan about 6 inches deep by 10-12 long and 5 or so wide. All the free parts to into that...

Do Colts Open Tops Shift POI?

Well this was with an unmentionable but 1 inch group at 25 yards and 6 shots hand rested, amazing. I should have gone home right after! I don't want any violations of course so if you want the details of the load PM me. And I don't have any ego in this, sure you can fake a picture, I...
