Does this look like an original?

As promised in an earlier post, I disassembled the rifle to look for any additional markings. on the top flat beside the nipple is: 186? just in front of the word “steel” is a faint script R on the bottom of the barrel about eight inches from the breech: PM

Does this look like an original?

I have been researching Chattahoochee Arms on the internet, and find several reports these guns are not safe as they are prone to cook-offs. Apparently the threads for the breech plug were cut too deep into the barrel and the internally exposed threads hold residue that will set off the next...

Does this look like an original?

If the metal parts are reproductions, made after Colt ended their Signature Series production, wouldn’t it have to bear Italian proofs? I will take it out of the stock tonight and see what markings are covered by the wood, they may be hidden there. The more I look at it I am convinced the stock...

Does this look like an original?

I purchased this rifle years ago when I first started getting interested in studying the CW era. I had a reproduction Enfield at the time and thought this would be a good mate. This was the only BP arm the seller had on a table full of modern rifles, he said he “thought” it was original. The...

    Question on N-SSA rules

I would take this question to the N-SSA forum, but non-members can’t post. I know there are skirmishers here, so hopefully someone can help. I talked to Whitacre and he said he normally makes his barrel’s about 1 inch longer than originals to allow for it to be cut back in the future if the...

What to do with this abused model 1842 musket

Just as a follow up, I did take this musket to the N-SSA fall nationals yesterday. Unfortunately, Mr Hoyt did not attend this year. But he was the consensus recommendation for the job if I pursue getting the barrel repaired. As an aside, this was my first time ever attending this event. My first...

Just picked up, Model 1849 Colt

Again, I appreciate all those who took the time to respond. I take it from the last couple of replies that I did not overpay. I just looked up the SN on Colts data base. Pistol was made in 1860. I hope I am still functional when I am 163 years old.

    Value of Austrian Lorentz

I appreciate everyone’s thoughts. The rifle does come with an original bayonet, but no scabbard. I am relatively new to black powder military arms, and candidly the current pricing is puzzling to me. It seems that good condition original arms routinely sell for less than new reproductions. To...

Just picked up, Model 1849 Colt

I know better, but just made an impulse purchase, hope I didn’t get stung to bad. Appears to be all matching. Bluing is gone, but all markings are pretty good including the stage coach scene. Holds on half cock and full cock, minor cylinder movement at full cock. Grips almost look to good to be...

NGD - 1861 Rifle Musket (but what exactly is it?)

Although the pistol parts were made by Uberti, I think the parts for the Signature series Colt Special Musket were made by Armi-sport. At least I was told by the rep at Lodgewood that the armi-sport nipples would fit my Colt musket.

    Value of Austrian Lorentz

I have been offered an original Austrian Lorentz musket. It is complete and in good overall condition. The seller wants me to make an offer. I am still pretty new at black powder, and these don’t seem to come up very often. What is a fair price on one of these? I know it is hard to say without...

What to do with this abused model 1842 musket

I would like to thank everyone who took the time to respond to my post. I have enjoyed reading everyone’s thoughts. I am going to take it to the N-SSA meet tomorrow and see what some knowledgeable folks think when they see it in hand.

Question on model 1863 Springfield bolster

So on original rifles was the bolster forged as part of the barreled receiver? Or was the bolster a separate part that was attached and if so how was it attached?
