    Percussion Firearm Safety & Hunting Tips;

    I have seen on some of the old locks, they have a safety that slides into the hammer. Got me thinking that I could add a cross bolt safety to my new slide hammer. Just put it on half cock and then push the safety on just like a modern 870. Thanks for the idea. Nothing beats keeping the muzzle...

    BS2366, weigh them, keep the heavy ones that are the same weight, recast the rest. The base needs to be full, sharp edges no rounded ones.

    Needs a polish job, but is near done! My own design and it works, and has a half cock. Push out the one pin and it all comes apart for cleaning. Not the prettiest design, but it should make a good hunting gun. Small large bore in .58 cal. It is also designed for interchangeable barrels. I can...

    The Slide Hammer grip is 9"s long, for a 7/16" ram rod. Made a new under rib, fills the dove tail slots better. Shaped the "entry pipe", with a ramp. I may do this to the first thimble.

    Storing black powder in a shed

    Also use desiccant packs in the can. Desiccant packs may not be needed, but make me feel better about long term storage.

    Thoughts when buying a gun

    Looking back this may be why I like a water proof sealer and finish on my guns. I use Spar Varnish with an equal amount of Tried & True, thinned a bit. You can always take the metal parts and clean, dry and oil them. But the stock needs a good sealing. Row Row Row Your Boat!

    Thoughts when buying a gun

    Many years ago I watched a fellow shoot five times with his shotgun, then look around and see if anyone was watching. Lay his gun out flat and tossed it out of a 12 to 15 foot tree stand. That always amazed me, my brother saw it also. This guy was just lazy, and really didn't need to. If...

    Thoughts when buying a gun

    A friend once told me why he shot a Bear Grizzly bow. [in late 1960s] "It was not expensive and if he needed an oar [paddle] or push pole for his canoe, he could use it." I have always looked at guns as a tool, and when buying a new one, I ask myself, would I, could I use it as an oar...
