How were Colt 1860-61 revolver barrels contoured?

The parts of the guns that had to be case hardened were soft fitted by file initially and then hard fitted after heat treating with stones and emery paper. Warping is always present to one degree or an other when case hardening , even when jigged/blocked down to prevent it hence the requirement...

How were Colt 1860-61 revolver barrels contoured?

A forging most definitely to begin with as were the receivers and then mills and shapers and finally hand fitting with files and stones. The wedge slots were broached I believe.

Rehardening frizzens - one size fits all? Musings for metallurgy masterminds....

Yeah, drawing the temper is critical ! I do so when ever hardening even when case coloring. I think most of the trouble occurs with the quench in water instead of quench oil which can cause cracks from rapid contraction. The other thing I think causes heat treating problems on occasion and was...

    chamber sealant

I'm equally certain it can and does happen from either end of the cylinder when nipples get washed out from erosion ,the hoods get battered from hammer impact , hammer spring tension is reduced for a better trigger pull and etc. I've watched quite a bit of slow-mo percussion revolver footage...

Saw this and thought it had potential

I have always wondered about the accuracy of a smooth bore at pistol ranges. I have a cousin who introduced me to muzzle loaders before my teens and we both have been actively using them now for over 60 years. I have never used a smooth bore in competition. My cousin insists that a smooth bore...

torque setting for percussion pistol nipples

I would think if the nipple wrench would hold that load one would wind up with a bunch of broken off stubs where there once was whole nipples. Boy, what a carbide drill ,easy-out and probably torch heat job to redeem that cylinder ! Only thing I hate worse is cleaning up a nipple cross thread mess.

    Colt 1851 Navy—120 yards?

Well, I wouldn't say trigger control is transferable between long gun and hand gun either. It's an entirely different support and pressure application from an extended arm in hand gun shooting.

    Coil spring vs leaf spring?

Whats increasing is the leverage as the cock is drawn further back but the energy load and tension is still sharply increasing into the flat or V spring. They are much shorter so the energy that is stored in them subtends less mass length which unloads and is transferred much faster to the work...

Only breath control . Totally different muscle group and sighting technique.

    Oval Bolt Stops

I agree on the hand length part but I'll wait a bit as the hand nose and ratchet teeth, cam and bolt fingers mate to see if I need to correct the timing a bit. I don't think a timing correction will be needed but if so it's no big deal.

Rehardening frizzens - one size fits all? Musings for metallurgy masterminds....

The trouble with the quick heat up and paste hardeners is time. I have quite a bit of experience in bone case coloring and it takes a good bit of time ( 1.5 hours or so ) at about 1500 degree F. to get a decent case depth from carbon migration into the steel. It still won't be more than about...

    Colt 1851 Navy—120 yards?

I can remember when in my prime of being able to hit a full size silhouette pig at 100 yards over 50 percent of the shots regularly, shooting offhand with a 4 inch Ruger Security six. I was a bit better two handed as I remember but not by much. Wonder why I never tried it with one of my...

torque setting for percussion pistol nipples

I think Anti-seize a pretty good idea but all I have ever used is gun oil on nipple threads and never have had a lick of trouble in removal or insertion. I think it probably more necessary with breech plug threads than nipples. I've always been more concerned with corrosion locking up threads...

    Coil spring vs leaf spring?

Coil wire springs are many times more reliable than are flat or V springs but the later give faster reaction (lock time). Also coil springs don't load up like flat and V as they are much longer (because of the coiling) and store energy over a longer power curve which generally means a smoother...

torque setting for percussion pistol nipples

Truth is I haven't ever thought any more about torque measuring a nipple than I would an assembly screw in a rifle or revolver.

Did they smoke when you got done with em ? 😄

    Colt 1851 Navy—120 yards?

You don't seem to realize the accuracy potential of an accurate revolver in the hands of a good shooter at 100 yards ! If practiced up they won't need to walk any shots into you especially on anything like a reasonably calm day. Another thing is long range rifle shots will drift and drop much...

    Colt 1851 Navy—120 yards?

The other thing is the fact that a good rifle shot in no way guarantees a good revolver shot !

    Oval Bolt Stops

Yeah, I always like to break the edge of the bolt crown with a stone an to polish it if needed to prevent any chance of galling the cylinder. A rub line from and early drop never causes any harm if the bolt lifts cleanly out of the notch before rotation. Quite often you will notice a contact...
