    July Postal Match

I shot the July target today as well with my Waksupi-built I. Haines FL rifle. I used a .535" RB (home cast) + .011" -.012" twill (?) patch wetted with 1 Ballistol : 6 water. As it was quite hot and humid, I took extra care in wiping the pan, flint, and frizzen so I wouldn't get hang fires...

    short and soft firing cones

You'll love the Slix Shot nipples, Bunk. I installed them on my Ruger NMA a few years ago and they turned it into a 100% reliable shooter with #11 caps. Neither the original nor Uncle Mike's replacement nipples shot worth a tinker's dam in that pistol, but the Slix Shots are perfection itself.

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

The genius you speak of was the late Ken Mollohan, a paint chemist and one of the founders of the Cast Bullet Association.

    June Postal Match

PK, That's fine shooting with a SB, especially for the second time out.

    June Postal Match

Here's my sorry entry (pistol) for this month. I'll try to shoot a rifle target before the end of the month. Particulars: I used a [ca. 1978] Rem. 1858 NMA revolver imported by Euroarms. This one wears a way too high front sight that I fabricated from cartridge brass and soldered to the...

    June Postal Match

11the corps, My NW trade gun (Green River Forge) had a heavy trigger pull too, but I fixed it by soldering a small pc. of nickel silver Code 100 HO model RR rail to the trigger (where the sear bears on it) and then shaped it with a Dremel and file so that the let off was lighter. It's been in...

    Powder Measure for BP

Years ago I saw the same thing as the original poster only with the Lee Perfect powder measure. As I had one, I decided to try it with real BP (FFg) and was [very] pleasantly surprised by how accurate it was. In short, the Lee Perfect PM's are a low cost, but not low quality, alternative to...

    First time doing woods walk

Bring a few extra caps, balls, and patches + a nipple removing wrench just in case.... You won't need a jar of water, but a small plastic bottle with a screw on top with water or rubbing alcohol (70% is fine, but 90% is better). Be sure to relax and have fun! Btw, I've made a check list for...

    June Postal Match

One question and one hint: Does a hit on the leaves or stem, i.e., the husk, count as well? My hint: I don't hit long, narrow targets mounted horizontally nearly as as well as mounting them vertically (so much more room for "forgiveness"). Ergo, I'm going to mount mine ~vertically and come...

    May 2023 Postal Target

Here's my entry for the rifle portion of the May target. I tried several sight pictures to hit the penny with only partial success (and the red dot didn't help much at all). What I am posting below was shot with my .50cal. Lyman GPR cap lock using .4885" RB's that I cast + .018" pillow ticking...

    1:24 Twist Barrel

Twist rate dictates, or at least limits projectile choice. A conical bullet is what you want and the Lee REAL is a conical. However, how well it fits your rifles bore will be a major factor in how accurately it shoots. If it is loose enough to seat with thumb pressure, accuracy will be so-so...

    May 2023 Postal Target

All, You know after firing my Ruger Gov't. Model .22cal. target pistol over the winter at an indoor range in FL, other pistols seem light by comparison and that certainly applies to the Ruger NMA. Speaking of which, the indoor range I just mentioned had a new Colt 2nd Gen. 1860 Army for sale...

    May 2023 Postal Target

Surprise, surprise! I got out to the range today and tried to "put some money in the bank," but with a revolver. Not much joy here, but it was fun trying. I used my Ruger NMA with .457" RB's and 30gr. FFFg (GOEX) with a lubed felt wad under the home cast RB. With Six Shot nipples there were...

    May 2023 Postal Target

After viewing PK's target, I decided to try my 20ga. NW trade gun as I hadn't fired it in +1yr. I wish I could say I did well, but the results were just plain embarrassing. Charitably, I scored no more than 20 pts. on the better of the two targets, even with a direct hit on the penny. Because...

    What mold is this?

TW, I've used both "steel" (meehanite) and anodized aluminum Maxi-Ball moulds and don't have a preference when casting. However, I most certainly prefer the T/C sourced moulds over the Lymans as the latter varied quite a bit in diameter and thus weight. I.e., some cast too small to be engraved...

Shooting Undersized Round balls into paper targets.....?? Accuracy?

I think you'd do better with a proper front rest and rear bag, Mark. Would you be willing to retest with my suggested change?

    April 2023 Postal Match

Got home from "wintering over" in FL Tuesday PM and had a chance to download and print targets for the April match. Here are my two entries (below) + particulars. Btw, BP Maniac is on to something with [slightly] undersized RB's. I.e., there's no beating the smaller RB's down the bore and you...
