    Ditch The Patch Knife

I cut from a strip at the muzzle...that way I know patch is always centered.

    .58 caliber?

Love the .58 with round ball! The powder companies do to, it's hard to sell much powder for .36's and .40's that only use 20-30 grains. Give me a big boomer with 90-100 grains.

    Frizzen Tempering?

Folks at L&R are really easy to work with. Don't hesitate to give them a call. If original part has a flaw I'm sure they will replace it.

    Gimme the Scotchbrite Treatment Please

Scotch Brite Green for me. Has done wonders on bores with surface rust.

    CVA Mountain Rifle

Lock and triggers were a bit of a week spot but their barrel would SHOOT! Never saw one that wouldn't. As a dedicated round ball shooter I always liked them for that reason alone.

what do you use when swabbing between shots?

I frequently get barrels in that look terrible but some WD-40 on a Scotch Brite pad does wonders. Use a patch jag one size smaller than bore. As it gets loose place a cleaning patch under the pad to snug it up. Won't remove pitting but sure cleans up surface rust and dried on gunk.

Best Caliber for Targets, 100 Yards & Less

I love .40's but in Oklahoma wind a .45 seems to be better past 50 yards.

    Everything .40 Cal. Muzzleloader

I've always loved the .40 for competition. It is very good at 25 and 50 yards but suffers in our Okla. winds at 100. It just won't buck the wind as well as a .45 or .50 but if we don't have a 30 MPH crosswind it is hard to beat!

    Fiddleback walnut look

On a new build I would use nicer wood, but sometimes I've had to try this to add some interest to blah woods on rifles that I was refinishing.

    Building an early Vermont fowler

As always it is inspirational! Guess you can make a silk purse from a sow's ear.

    Fiddleback walnut look

Many Leman rifles were artificially striped such as this. With a good finish they should not fade that much. I've used several colors of leather dye to good effect. Start with a yellow then some red and then dark brown.

    How did you get hooked?

Watched Davy Crockett, The Swamp Fox and then Daniel Boone on TV and played with toy ML rifles. When about 14 built a ML from Dixie as a Jr. High shop project (Can't see that happening in any school today!). Loved then and still do, the simplicity of the mechanics.

    WANTED TC Cherokee .36

    Beautiful wood!

    Is my bore ruined?

Blue color indicates a 600-700 degree range which is the flowing temp for most soft solders for sights I use a hard solder which flows at 1200 and parts are heated to a cherry red. As long as parts are allowed to air cool I have never seen any adverse effect to a barrel.

    Hopkins and Allen .45 underhammer

Only drawback I've ever found on these is flash and cap shrapnel. Don't want to shoot these in short sleeves.
