    Her name is " Bumblebee"

My flintlock Pennsylvania Hunter that is. Took her out today with the .492/.010, mink oil for lube, with .54 wad and 70 grains of 2f Swiss. One flyer, my fault, and the 3rd group hit 2 inches higher than the first two. Groups were as follows: 1st, 1 & 3/4 2nd, 1 & 13/16 3rd, 1& 11/16 These are...

    Confused

Bore Butter. Used it for years, both as lube and protectant. No issues. Folk talk about it building up with the same dread as a T7 crud ring. I once got a .45 T/C Hawken that was heavily swabbed with b.b some years before. When I patched it out, it was BROWN. I thought it was toast and expected...

    TC Pennsylvania Hunter giving FITS

The crown on my first one was recut for reasons unknown to me. Looks well done though, and doesn't cut patches. The second rifle has the factory crown and looks great. Also doesn't cut patches. Both are very even so I don't suspect bore runout. I've seen some T/C barrels with uneven crowns. The...

I have some Pa Conicals and also cast up a mess of 250 grain REALs. Will try those in my Hawken and Renegade, but they might do well in the Pennsylvania Hunters too. Stubby things...

Swiss powder. By far and away the best I've ever used. When my shot to shot velocity variations get above 10 fps ( actual, not calculated) I'm doing something wrong. Tragic how inefficient black powder is... In my other rifles, one in particular, inch or less 3 rounders at 100 yards are not...

An American Percussion Long Rifle That Has Been In My Family for Many Generations Possibly by John Hinds

I keep detailed notes about all of my "wifles". This is so generation's to come, hopefully, won't have to wonder too much about Pappy's old girls. None are custom. Just good, honest meat guns.

    Sometimes the fix is easy

Not worried about the extra holes, even though they're pretty deep... Just a bit shoddy. As far as filing a frizzen. If they're soft enough to file, they're WAY too soft.

Definitely the half rounds. Helps the balance and the full octagonals I've seen all had Q.L.A muzzles.

Harleynut Thanks for the input. This rifle is a hunter, so very tight loads are a no go. She shows very little signs of use, so the barrel probably needs to be broken in. At this point, accuracy with tight loads is poor, even if patch condition is good. I've loaded and pulled ball and checked...

    TC Pennsylvania Hunter giving FITS

Pennsylvania Hunters are curious rifles. Handle one for awhile and you won't want to put it down. They were made from 1988 - 2001 and there were a number of changes made during that time. My 2 are 7k apart on serial numbers, but the younger, Bumblebee, has one of the tang bolts threaded into the...

    Sometimes the fix is easy

I have a fine Renegade .50 flintlock that had a VERY poor frizzen/pan fit. The frizzen contacted the front of the pan resulting in quite a gap between it and the rear of the pan. Enough to QUICKLY lose the prime. Spark was adequate, but that issue was a no go for a hunter! Was thinking about...

I will agree to disagree about swabbing. I did switch to 2f and it did seem to help. The abused patches are unnerving though. I do have some .012 ticking... And NorthFork, no problem with the " I told you so". After all, you actually did! However! This rifle has the MOST disagreeable habit of...

The load is 70 grains 2f Swiss, a .54 cal Ox Yoke o.p. wad, Ox Yoke .010 patch lubed with mink oil.

Tried the .015s heavily lubed. Shot well YESTERDAY. All over the paper today... Decided, what the heck? Tried heavily lubed .010s. Patches shown heavy land fraying. One was blown. I could almost get them started by blowing on them. At 50 yards, they CUT HOLES!? Gentle folk, I present you... The...

Nothing in life is obligated to make sense. The bumblebee, by the laws of physics, is incapable of flight... I'm looking for what works, not what conventional wisdom says should work. 3 inch groups will kill deer. But the rifle ought to be capable of better and that's what I'm after. Good...

The 70 grain charge has given my best results in a number of different rifles with conicals. And unmentionables. Plus, I like getting 100 shots per pound! Also like being able to use a little less powder for similar velocities compared to other powders/ granulations. So. I take her to the range...

I thought about 2f, and fiddling with charge weights too. Always wondered if slow twists were powder piggies compared to a good 1-48. In the past, I tried T7 in a flintlock. No ignition issues, but did lose a disturbing amount of powder through the vent. Its a fine grained powder. Swiss 3f is a...

TC Hawken rare stock? Experts please.

Gray Beard yes. Swampman no. I spoke to a fellow who was a TC gunsmith and he said the only laminate Hawken he ever saw was in the " Altar". That was TC's model room. I saw an ad for a run of 2000 laminates, but found no confirmation it was ever done.
