With a carbide square hand graver and hammer. Tap, tap, tap … repeat. Drew the lettering with a fine point sharpie and followed the lines. Sharpened tip to a very short .030” heel. (GRS Tools 022-618 C-Max Carbide)

The Boiled Linseed Oil stock finish is coming up nicely. The more I work it, the better the color and sheen get. Just a few more hand-rubbed coats of BLO and I’m going to call the stock finished. Now just have to get the iron prepped and browned, and the patch box engraving completed.

Final fit-up before browning begins. All that’s left is to brown all the iron parts, engrave the patch box, a few more hand-rubbed coats of BLO, and final assembly.

@Zutt-man I use all alcohol based stains for stock finishing. The mixture I used on this stock is a 3:2 mix of Chestnut Ridge Gunstock stain with Red and R Gale Lock Co. #69. That’s the base. I then added 1/2 part dark brown Fiebing’s and 1 part mahogany Feibing’s. It needed a little brown...

Well, the soak stage is over … the color came out exactly where I wanted it. A few days to cure and more coats of BLO will be hand-rubbed in.

Like I said before, I’ve decades of woodworking behind me, but believe me when I say that I’ve never built a flintlock before in my life. That said, I have two mentors teaching, guiding, and encouraging me, without whom I would not be in the position I am. Truth

Color check … hickory ramrod displaying color mix for rifle. The stain is a combination of several shades of alcohol based wood stains and Feibing’s leather dyes. A custom mix I created many years ago, and adjusted to the correct shade and red level for a realistic Jacob Dickert color.

Not quite artistic, but over 45 years of woodworking experience and a passion for working with my hands. The drawings took over two weeks just to get on paper. Burned up a lot of time because of lack of drawings skills. Graph paper helped immensely. But it is, in fact, the first flintlock I have...
