    Euroarms 1858 Remington

I have one I bought in 1968, taught my wife how to shoot with it during our dating days. Unfortunately I had no mentors and it has been abused more than I care to admit so it now sits in the back of the cabinet slightly out of time hoping I find someone that can fix it.

Best way to deal with a fresh walnut log.

Once upon a time I knew a lot more about drying wood than I do now and I agree that the safest way to dry a small batch of any wood species will be by properly air drying but there is nothing wrong with kiln drying so long as the correct drying schedule is followed. A commercial kiln drying...

Daniel Boone TV show historical accuracy

The ancestors of Danial Boone and Pres Lincoln were neighbors. The Danial Boone Homestead and the Historical marker for the Lincoln house are only a few miles apart close to Route 422 East of Reading PA. The Lincoln marker reads: President Lincoln’s great-great grand-father Mordecai purchased...

Hate to do it, but here goes.

You're an Inspiration. Thanks for showing me how to stare into the eye of adversity with strong will and a clear path. I hope I can do half as well. I am praying for you and especially your wife.

At What Range Have Most of Your Big Game Animals Been Shot At?

Yep, that is how I count a pace; I used to have 12 to the chain.

What's the one muzzleloader you regret parting with most?

I haven't had to part with any yet.

And the bartender asked, why the long......barrel?

I was taught that the poorer quality powder called for a longer barrel but I can't vouch for the quality of my teacher.

Do you carry a modern sidearm when hunting in addition to your muzzleloader?

I started as soon as Pennsylvania made it legal. I had two bear encounters that made me decide that it made sense (I never can find them during bear season). I also carry during archery season when bear encounters are more likely (we do have bears that chew on archers here).

Why I can’t see my sights.

Prayers to you for a successful outcome.

Will #11 CCI work on a ROA?

I guess I've been lucky but I use #11 CCI and Remingtons caps on Santa Barbara's, Euroarms, Uberties, Piettas and Rugers without any problems. I never owned a #10.

Why This Wood and Not That on 18th Century Rifles

Is a maple the maple or an ash the ash. Acer saccharum (sugar or sometimes called rock maple) is the preferred gunstock wood with the Janka hardness scale of 1450, Acer rubrum (red maple) slides into the gunstock trade because it looks a lot like Acer saccharum but is closer to cherry (Prunus...

How Long Have You Been Hunting ...

I got my first smooth-bore in 1960 at age 10, so I've been at it for 60 years. Borrowed a cousin's original .32 percussion and hunted with it through the 70's and got hooked on muzzleloaders. Passed on a few does with a flintlock this year because I had already taken one during Pennsylvania's...

Rendered deer fat as patch lube

I use it mixed 1:1 with crisco as a lube for my REAL and TC maxi balls; I heat and dip. I also use it strait over the bullets or balls of my black powder revolvers. I use olive oil for my patches, was going to try rendered racoon fat this year but did'nt get that project done. Being mountain...

    SOLD Richards Cape Gun 16/.40

I'm wondering what type of sights it has; single front bead, front and back, or a drilling type drop-down rear sight?

WANTED Austin & Halleck set trigger adjustment screw

I went to my local hardware store and asked about set screws, the clerk said they had lots of sets of screws so I had to explain that I was looking for a single screw that would adjust how far a fulcrum could go up and/or down. After thinking for a moment the clerk took me over to a stool with...

WANTED Austin & Halleck set trigger adjustment screw

I’m looking for an Austin & Halleck flint mountain rifle set trigger adjustment screw, I lost mine. The rifle barrel is marked Provo in case there was a difference with their different production locations. Anyone know where I might find one (or three). Thanks for your help.

    Ramrod tip extending past muzzle

I doubt that an inch or two overhang would make a noticeable change in accuracy in a hunting situation but once had a range buddy that claimed that his 18" bayonet mounted on his rifle (under the bore) put a bullet about 5" higher at 100 yards than the same load in the same rifle without the...

    Fire Danger?

I'm one of the people that investigate the origin and cause of wildfires. Muzzleloaders do cause wildfires. We all know that under normal conditions they wont, but the drier it gets the more the risk goes up. While hunting with a muzzleloader it is the 1 hour and 10 hour fuel moisture we have...

    PA early ML

RB, the game kill from those fires isn't massive. Most of the healthy critters figure out how to get out of the way. The sick and the very young have the highest mortality. I'm just back from a couple of the western fires (I'm a Pennsylvanian); the Red Salmon Complex in Northern California...
