Huge Gun Show; Not a Cap In Sight

Door fees...geeze don't get me started. Gun shows in my area were $5 to get in pre covid, that quickly went to $7, then $8...now there all $10...per day. The latest kicker... last one I went to was $20, good for the 2 day weekend they said, I said I only want to go in today, sorry, $20 please.

    Odd percussion nipple

So this is for my Allen FA Santa Fe Hawken... it has standard 1/4-28 threads, I have several nipples left over from a TC Renegade and they fit, well, they will thread in just fine anyway. The nipple that came with the gun is what I'm trying to identify, and it is most likely not original. It is...

    Single stock for Kentucky Rifle

I bet if you glued it together with a wood shim as mentioned and then did a faux tiger stripe curly finish you could hide the splice pretty much completely.

Cow elk with a .50 flinter and rb

Nice job. Loose your barrel wedge? I hate when that happens. Looks like you were able to fight through it, kudos!

    velocity estimate??

Triple 7 is pretty hot stuff, I bet your closer to 1400fps. This is a good calculator, it only has Swiss powders but is pretty accurate from my comparisons. https://www.p-max.uk/cgi-bin/black_powder.cgi

    Blondie gets it done

Blondie is my refinished Allen FA Santa Fe Hawken and, in my hands, we got her first buck this morning. It was a good hunt, shot a nice eater hog the evening before and my brother got his best buck ever about an hour after I shot mine this morning. .520 round ball with .012" patch and TOW mink...

    November Postal Match Target

First time participating in this, been printing each months target for last 3 months and finally got to get out and shoot some. Rifle is a .54 Allen F.A. Santa Fe Hawken (actually .53 cal). And I forgot to include the grain of powder, which was 80 gr for both targets. Shot one off hand and one...

    What rifle do I have?

Certainly possible that the barrel specs could have been different back in 2008, and while yours may not match anything in the current Pedersoli offerings, aside from the barrel specs, it's a dead ringer for a Pedersoli Hawken of some kind, in my humble opinion. :)

    What rifle do I have?

Pedersoli website says the .50 cal Missouri River Hawken has a 1:24 twist. They also make/made the Rocky Mountain Hawken, but only show it in .54 cal on the website, with a 1"65 twist. Otherwise pretty much the same rifle, I always liked the the look of them, I'd have one for sure...

Kibler has announced a Hawken Kit in the works.

FWIW... my preference, as a hunter, would be for an authentic late Hawken half stock percussion in .54 or .58 with a 32"-36" barrel of 1" max across the flats, tapered to the muzzle, or even 15/16" and tapered if possible, to keep the finished weight down in the 8-9 lb range, or less. And curly...

But plate re-finish or recoil pad

Fixed up Grand Dad's leather recoil pad with a laced bottom seam for occasional removal. It had a piece of old short pile carpet in it for the pad, replaced that with some 1/4" yoga mat material.

But plate re-finish or recoil pad

Thanks, Springer. That one chip looks worse in the photo than it actually is, I may work on it a little more but I'm OK with it as is. Maybe I should start another thread to ask this, but, do these have any choke to the barrels?

But plate re-finish or recoil pad

Well, it turned out better than I expected, I guess. The butt plate seems to have some flex to as it's tightened up and the underside edges were REALLY sharp, thus actually cutting into the wood right near the edge and chipping away at it in places. I was able to glue and clamp most of the...

But plate re-finish or recoil pad

Great advice Ian, Oldwood, wiscoaster and the nod from "comfortably numb" on Springers post. I went and contemplated this all over supper, ahem, dinner or whatever the evening meal should be referred to as. Upon closer examination of the leather recoil pad, it looks like the bottom seam is not...

But plate re-finish or recoil pad

So I inherited granddads otherwise super nice condition Navy Arms percussion 12g SxS manufactured in 1985. Everything about it is primo except the but plate. Granddad made a really nice hand stitched leather slip-on recoil pad for it back in the day which I probably should have just left on...

    Shipping Muzzleloaders USPS

Now if only the postal worker behind the counter has read and understood this, and all the other regulations on mailing firearms. I got so tired of arguing with the mail nazi at my local PO I just went to the next closest office and did not disclose what the contents were, sent off without a...
