    low number tc hawken .50

I had a flinter .45 that was, I believe, in the 1400 range of serial numbers. Probably made in the early 1970s.

    Overhaul of really cheap horn

Well, you sure "ruined" that horn; it'll never be worth $17 now........😂

    Cabelas Hawken style rifles

Yea just a little; I have one in .54 with the standard style stock. I ditched the factory rear sight; it is held on with two screws. I filed in a dovetail removing one of the mounting screw holes and put in a traditional styled fixed sight. The screw holes are far enough apart that you are going...

.45 T/C Seneca followed me home

Went to the local gun show yesterday; this little orphan followed me home. .45 T/C Seneca; great bore; no cracks in the stock; no chip out of the hammer cup; brass patina just like I like it. Don't know when I will get to the range; hope she shoots well.

Using Butcher Block Conditioner as external protection?

While I do like to use Minwax Special Dark on occasions, it seems to me that there isn't much difference in consistency between the Minwax (parafin wax mixed with crude oil by products) and butcherblock/spoon butter (beeswax and mineral oil usually). While some spoon butters can be on the thin...

How long do you let your powder sit in the bore between sits?

A load that is placed into a clean/dry barrel can be left as long as you like. I have only had one fail to fire over the years and that occurred when I left a load unfired for several days after sitting in some very heavy wet snow conditions. What I like to do is attach a warning LOADED tag to...

Can or should you paper patch a Lee REAL bullet?

Speaking strickly to using a REAL or similar style bullet for a field or hunting load you should determine if the bullet can easily move off of the powder charge during the normal carry and jostling of a rifle as you hunt (I'm assuming that you already know that you shouldn't fire a muzzle...

AMR 12 Gauge Drop In barrel...Info please.

Thanks for the reply; there is a little bit of the character rust I mentioned running through the area of proof marks making them very difficult to see. I'm going to have a busy weekend here; maybe I'll get a chance in a few days to take pictures and/or look closer.

    cast iron bullets?

Dear Zonie, I believe that you may have mistyped that last sentence; perhaps you meant to say 15 minutes ago.😁

AMR 12 Gauge Drop In barrel...Info please.

Funny you should say that, the guy I bought it from (son of the previous owner) refered to it as "probably scrap." It has what I would call character rust on the outside of the barrel. I'll keep you in mind, but, I don't think I'm quite down to $20 yet.

AMR 12 Gauge Drop In barrel...Info please.

The barrel that I have looks like that, but, without the full rib under the thimbles. That is not a Hawken stock; maybe a Pennslyvannia Hunter stock would work; they came with octogon to round barrels. In fact that would seem to make a better shotgun set up than the Hawken stock would. T/C...

    How to apply fake striping

I am far from a pro at this, but, I have done a couple of reclamation CVAs in the past and the guys who bought them said they really liked the striping. I used a modified brush as you note, with alcohol based dye/stain overtop of the base color stain (also alcohol based). In my case I used...

AMR 12 Gauge Drop In barrel...Info please.

I bought some estate sale goodies last week and included was a barrel marked AMR; 12 GA. Black Powder only; It is 15/16ths octogon to round and marked Toledo Armas on the top flat; Made in Spain on the bottom flat; it is 28" muzzle to breech plug and percussion. It has two ram rod thimbles on...

    Advise on sights needed.

I don't know why exactly, but, this caused an idea to pop into my mind; I'd like to see a sequel to "The Patriot" where an aging Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson) is handing smoke poles to some grandkids and asking em, "What did I teach you boys about shooting?" Boys with condescending and quizzical...

    Electronic Hearing Protection

Back in the day (around 1990) I bought a set of Bilson 707 for around $110. I see their current model is about twice that price now. I was an instructor and range officer and wanted to be able to hear conversation/range instruction without removing muffs. They worked well in this regard. The...

To Squirrel or Not To Squirrel....

Now, with the cost of roofing supplies these days, those are two squirrels that I would NOT shoot.......trap time.

    Old can of Pyrodex

I was the range a few years back and heard an unusual muzzle blast. I heard the shooter mutter something like, "What was that?" He was using Pyrodex and said he hadn't shot in quite a few years. An inspection of that Pyrodex showed that about half of the particles or more had turned a brownish...

    leon beaux caps

Can't help with the leon beaux. I have some older tins of Remington and the cap size is printed on a paper band that surrounds the tin; if these bands were originally glued down as a seal the glue has dried on my tins and they could easily fall off and get lost.

    Latest purchase

Agree with bubba.50 here; I have spade stamped Hawken with a higher five digit serial number than this one and it has inlet barrel wedge escutcheons and (had) the early high cheek piece. I'm guessing that since this one appears to have surface mounted wedge escutcheons that the stock is newer...
